Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.12 Display Driver for Windows Vista

For the first time, ever since I got my first ATI card, a 9500 Pro, a CAT version fails to install properly

I got the "No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly" message.

Sapphire 3870 X2, in Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

I thought it might have been a corrupted D/L, so I D/Led again, and tried a 2nd time, including installing it manually...same result. Had to go back to the 8.11s.

Do I have to uninstall previous versions before install this, or will installing them will take care of the previous installation automaticaly?

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.12 Display Driver for Windows Vista

Normally there's no need to uninstall first. However the last few drivers seem to have been rocky with Crossfire/X2 setups for what I've been reading in ATI's forum, so I'd prefer to do a manual uninstall first with an X2 card or several cards in Crossfire. To potentially lower the risk for trouble.

Also if the previous driver was a beta then it's best to uninstall first as well. When going from one official release version one can even expect not to have to reboot the system in between, but all bets are off with leaked betas in the mix.

Addition: If all else fails, try turning off any antivirus software while installing the driver. With Kaspersky I get a warning about a potential liability that I just ignore and it runs fine, but perhaps some other software denies the operation without notifying.

I've been running the 8.12 RC3s for a few days. Just downloaded this official version and ran the installer. I never uninstall prior to installing new drivers. This one was no exception. Installed without a hitch and, so far, knock on wood, no noticeable problems.

I first learned about installing 'over the top' from Omegadriver. Been doing it now for years.

If any problems do crop up, I'll be posting about them.

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.12 Display Driver for Windows Vista

I think I will go the lazy way and install over the previous ones (8.10 with the hotfix). The only thing I am worried about is if I have problems to a securom protected game, I have heard stories where people lose activations because the drm thinks you have installed the game to a different PC even if you just update drivers. (I have already updated the sound drivers a few days ago).

That's a new one to me. As I said above, I've been doing this for years and I don't recall ever having a problem with a game not starting due to updated video drivers. I'm sure I've got a few with tight DRM, too.

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.12 Display Driver for Windows Vista

Every time I install new Catalyst version I have to rearrange the desktop icon positions, because the screen resolution is changed during the installation. Why don't they modify the installer so that it would remember the positions or don't change the resolution?

EDIT: OK, I found this. Works great

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.12 Display Driver for Windows Vista

Since moving to Vista 64, i've been installing new versions right over the current install. So far so good. 8.12 no exception, installed smoothly.

Thanks RoyBatty for the find. Reminds me of the snapshot icons feature on Amiga. I'll have to give that a try.

Yes, it seems ok. Fallout 3 feels better too.

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.12 Display Driver for Windows Vista

But for some reason no game runs as it should now. I haven't installed anything else. Games will crash the system on exit. Including Fallout 3 and C&C Renegade. Well, to be more exact, the keyboard still works, I think, but the monitor turns black. The power remains and it doesn't lose signal, it just shows nothing but blackness. I press the power button and I can hear windows shutting down properly.

I think I will reinstall the drivers.

I just found out that the latest ATI Tray Tools finally work under Vista x64 without any special tweaks or launchers. I got used to the CCC, but I might go back to just the driver + ATT

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.12 Display Driver for Windows Vista

Edit: The ATI Customer Care article below now provides a hotfix package that "may help resolve the issue".

A big problem with using two or more 4850 cards in crossfire has been verified.

Quote:
After installing ATI Catalyst driver release 8.12 for two or more ATI Radeon HD ™ 4850 graphics cards in a system with ATI CrossFireX™ technology, the system restarts and halts on a black screen. The black screen occurs prior to the loading of the desktop for the Windows Vista 64-bit or Windows Vista 32-bit operating systems.

This issue ONLY occurs when two or more ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphic cards are installed in the system with ATI CrossFireX technology. One single ATI Radeon HD 4850 card will not encounter this issue.
AMD Customer Care

From what I've read I would avoid this driver version with any crossfire setup, or be prepared for trouble if giving it a try.

Might try 8.12 later. (Still using 8.11 and looking around forums to see if there are any major issues with it)

Wonder if it will run Tomb Raider Underworld at 8xaa without a noticable dip in fps now...

Thanks.

I ran into two issues and the first is because I have just upgraded from an NV card. Uninstalling the NV driver and Physx driver allowed 8.12 to install without issue.

kn00tcn the reason I quoted your post is because after removing the NV Physx driver I also had problems with Vantage. What I did is ran the installer and chose to "repair" the installation problem solved. You might try that because I don't know if it is related to me removing NV drivers or in fact within the Cat 8.12 release itself ....

It did that to me as well under two instances I mentioned above. Make sure all previous graphic drivers are removed prior to installation (ATI and NV) and run a Drivercleaner as well.

This one seems very picky about that as in the first instance I installed the drivers that came with my new HD4870 then the Cat 8.12 release over it. Same deal came up with "No compatible hardware found"

Re: ATI Catalyst™ 8.12 Display Driver for Windows Vista

It works now, but I've still gone back to 8.11 since I'm not playing anything that really demands the "boost" in performance from 8.12.

And (this was a few days ago) I've worked out why the 8.12 didn't work initially, it's coz the graphics card became "loose" ???!!! I had to shutdown, and reinsert the card then it worked on boot. odd.
