Troublesome Drivers Methinks

Hello. I am having a problem running a great game called Dreamfall.

I am experiencing major-crash issues running on the latest hardware and drivers (4850X2 Cat. 9.5).

The problem occurs at the beginning of the game which I am unable to overcome no matter what I have tried.

I recently experienced similar crashes due to lack of PSU power which in turn caused me to upgrade my PSU (OCZ-750W).

Explanation of crash and possible causes:

The first time it crashed had caused a blank screen and stuttering sound and Windows was inopperable (ctrl+alt+del).

The second crash caused horizontal lines (yellow and white) to appear across the screen with stuttering sound also and Windows also inopperable.

Could be due to faulty PSU, but have not had any other issue. Could be faulty GPU, but have not forced an overclock.

So methinks driver issue.

New or old install of the game?

Less than 3 weeks.

She was running well until I let my little cousin run the game which it crashed the first time.

Hmmmm...... "little cousin" should work for the software company producing faults. You have no idea what he could have done?

Everything else runs okay?

Big Grin Re: Troublesome Drivers Methinks

Ok. I've found a problem guys. I ran a Furmark Stability test and the screen went white after 300 seconds and hitting 76c. Looks like it's back to the shop for me.

Re: Troublesome Drivers Methinks

Ok. I managed to keep it stable for 3000 seconds on Furmark. Temps were up to 82c though. So I installed an adjustable 12cm fan I had lying around to help case temp, but still 82c. At full load for 3000 seconds is that like bad for a 4850X2 with known release issues and known driver issues?

Re: Troublesome Drivers Methinks

are you using anything to manually control the fan speed? something to set the fan speed to a fixed percentage before you start to game? if not i suggest giving rivatuner a try and setting up some fan profiles for boot and gaming.

I got Dreamfall working by disabling all of the settings in CCC.

Why is it still working now?
No probs with anything else.

Re: Troublesome Drivers Methinks

wat are the mobo temps when the gpu is at +75c? my reasoning behind the profiles was to prevent a heat buildup and migration to the mobo.

any more games you can try?

I don't know why, but everything's working again!

All I had to do was set Cat AI to standard.

The advanced setting must have Major flaws.

So is that like Dx 10.1?

So if a Dx9 game tries to display Dx10.1 graphics using Cat AI Advanced system then crashes? Or something?>

Re: Troublesome Drivers Methinks

catalyst AI set to advanced can have major issues..... it makes heavy use of optimisations or even forces that which is not recommended. I'm not sure if ATI had changed this since they implemented it, but it was that when you forced catalyst AI to Advanced using crossfire, it would force AFR onto programs that couldn't use it properly and in such cases, could produce the very issues your having..

It's BEST to leave the Cat AI to standard

Which is what I've done. I've been playing Dreamfall though and have been missing sleep. No problems since. Thank goodness.
