Radeon x1950 Pro AGP/Win 7 - keeps freezing
Hey guys, I installed Windows 7 on a seperate HDD and the install went fine.
After some time of use, everything just freezes. I am attributing this to my videocard as ATI says this is a legacy device and not supported. Win7 installed some driver (version 8.5) and the freezing continues. I've tried installing the 9.3 catalyst package for win7 beta and the latest legacy driver package (9.8 for vista) but to no avail. I've tried forcing the display driver install and when I check the driver properties, it still says 8.5. I'm not sure what else to do, back on XP on my main HDD where everything works fine. I checked catalyst and the 8.5 refers to the graphic package. On XP it shows the Catalyst version as 09.3. Any ideas?

Hi,
uninstall the driver with ATI Install Manager then reboot the computer and enter safe mode and clean the driver with DriverCleaner.NET, restart in normal mode and install the Catalyst 9.9.

Possibly.
Windows 7 is lowering the fan speed to conserve power. Your card is simply overheating. Make sure EPU is disabled. |

I am unable to install Catalyst 9.9 as I get an error during installation. How do I disable EPU? Nothing is working so far, like 5minutes ago I was on Win7, hit the link for this forum and it froze. Back to XP in the meantime.

Re: Radeon x1950 Pro AGP/Win 7 - keeps freezing
You won't be able to install 9.9. Legacy 9.8 is currently the latest. Legacy 9.11 should come out this month. You might want to watch out for it.
I'd suggest to try to use your Win7 install without an ATI driver at all, to see if you're getting freezes without it, just to make sure it's indeed the card that's to blame. |

You're wrong. Legacy versions are 9.3, 9.6, 9.9 and 9.12(not released)
