Perscribed Method

I feel kinda silly for asking this but its been awhile since I've uninstalled and reinstalled a new video card. The last few times I've down this it was while installing a fresh copy of window on my computer. I'm getting my HD 5870 later this afternoon and was wondering what is the best method for adding the drivers. I'm currently using the 9.12 Catalyst Suite with my old card. Do I need to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall the drivers once the new card is in or can I just swap cards out and use the drivers I already have installed?

Re: Perscribed Method

Since you'll be using the same drivers with the new card, there's a good chance that you could just swap the hardware and all would be fine. However, I'd do a driver uninstall, shut down (or restart to Safe Mode and let Driver Cleaner do it's thing if you've go it and then shut down), swap the cards, install drivers. Good luck with the process and enjoy the new card.

Re: Perscribed Method

It should just find the proper driver for the new card if you leave the 9.12 as is..... Of course Ivan is correct, the longer uninstall/clean/reinstall would be the best route.

You will be installing the exact same package though,

Re: Perscribed Method

I've was kinda hoping ATI's new drivers for January would have been out by now so I could use them. Since I'm thinking that they should be out very soon maybe I just swap the cards out and let Win 7 do it's thing. Then install the 1.10 Catalyst Suite when it comes out.

BTW, thanks for your help, guys. Appreciate it.

Re: Perscribed Method

I just recently upgraded from HD 4770 to HD 5770. Didn't bother with any drivers at all. Just pop in the new card and away you go. Just reinstall the drivers to make use of any new features that new card has that are absent from the previous one. I very RARELY ever uninstall drivers. Just install over the top and keep moving.

AND, BTW, the new drivers will be 10.1 .... not the other way around. [At least not if the naming scheme holds up. ]

I'd go with the method IvanV posted.

Re: Perscribed Method

I've almost always just installed the new CATs right on top of the old ones. There was a time back ing the 6.xx days, when I had to uninstall CCC before installing any new drivers, but for the drivers themselves, I've never really found it necessary.

With the later CATS, the uninstall routine that they run at the beginning takes care of all the uninstalling that you really need. Using things like Driver Sweeper, and the like can give you more problems that solutions at times.

If you notice, the majority of people with "driver problems" almost always start their post with: "I uninstalled the drivers using..."

On my last two upgrades, I just shut down the system, put in the new hardware, and fired it up. I had no problems at all. The upgrades were 1950 Pro ---> 3870 X2 ---> 2X 4870 in Crossfire.

Glad to have helped. I've gone through plenty of ATI video card upgrades over the years to feel quite comfy doing it the way I do it.
