New ATI Driver crashes my computer??
Hello, I've been running into problems ever since an update that happened a few days ago I believe and I have been trying for several hours today to reinstall my driver with no success. I thought I knew what I was doing but I feel at this point I have no idea. Downloaded the driver cleaner couple hours ago to clean up any ATI files and I still get blue screens. Using a 5400 card. I feel the problem started when auto updated to 10.8? Blue screen said it has issues with memory management. Right now the driver is disabled. If I could get any kind of help walking through some novice checks that would be great. I will continue to check back as I work through this. Thanks.

Re: New ATI Driver crashes my computer??
After I clean up I go to install catalyst install manager and it says that it doesn't run correctly. To run it again with windows 7 changes. Second time I run it after I click the install nothing else happens. That is the latest here. Thanks.

Re: New ATI Driver crashes my computer??
You did re-enable the device before trying to reinstall, right? Otherwise, that could be the reason the installations are failing.
Do you have a system restore point from before the update? If so, load it. If not, you mentioned auto update, what do you mean by it? If it was Windows Update, go to Control Panel\Programs and Features and choose View Installed Updates from the panel to the right. Sort the list by Installed On and uninstall any updates that you got on that date. Generally, avoid getting driver updates through Windows Update whenever possible. After that, run the driver installation package, but choose uninstall and remove all the components that you may have. Then install normally. You can try the 10.10c hotfix, that's the driver I'm currently using and it's been fine so far.

I once trusted Windows Updates to update my audio card drivers. Instead of updating my RealTek audio card drivers, it put C-Media drivers on my system and completely fouled up my audio. I also do NOT allow Windows to Automatically Update anything. Rather, I have Windows Updates to notify me and then I make the decision as to which updates to allow to be installed. |

Re: New ATI Driver crashes my computer??
Ok so after several attempts after a complete melt down I was able to get back to a restore point before the Windows Update installed the ATI driver. Now I am going to check and see what else was installed, currently downloading catalyst_10.10b_hotfix_win7_0ct21.exe from the link provided and looking into what you said about re-enable before I go any further. Thanks for the help and patience.

Re: New ATI Driver crashes my computer??
After download and enabling the ATI driver. I run catalyst_10.10b_hotfix_win7_0ct21.exe and I get to the point where it asks if i want to installed or uninstall all ati devices and I choose to uninstall first time around. Windows prompts me with Program Compatibility Assistant saying Windows dectect that this program did not run correctly. Windows has applied compatibility settings to this program etc.
Program: Cata Install Manager etc. So going to continue to look into this while I start to backup more files in the mean time. Thanks. |

Re: New ATI Driver crashes my computer??
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
is what I get when I look at Device Status |

Re: New ATI Driver crashes my computer??
unpack that ati catalyst.... cancel the installation..
go into the device manager and right click the adapter and click "update driver" .. DIRECT it to the C:\ati\suppot\....... so on and so forth to the driver that was extracted... force it to install the drivers from this package... Reboot and see what occurs

Re: New ATI Driver crashes my computer??
Bingo! That was the trick. Thanks a bunch. Definitely learned a few valuable lessons through this one. Never trust windows auto updates! Ever since I had installed 7 last year things have been running smooth and I let me guard down. Don't let it happen to you. Thanks again.
As a follow up question. Now that I have Driver Cleaner. Any suggested follow up maintenance I should run since I have been letting windows installed updates and drivers for a while now? Computer feels to be running heavy at times so would like to start working on cleaning it up. Thanks guys. |

Re: New ATI Driver crashes my computer??
i let windows update only my webcam/keyboard/mouse drivers...
as far as audio is concerned... i let it update the soundmax/ADI hardware.. but never realtek... never video drivers unless they are something other then ati/nvidia.... For example i'll let windows update the intel video drivers even for the i3.... they work great.. but it's still best to get the driver direct from intel.
