AMD Catalyst 11.9 RCx
Apparently, this is some sort of a leak, and it seems to be the real deal (not a fake). I'm to lazy to try them / not at home / have little time for gaming these days, but some are reporting nice performance increase compared to the 11.8s in games such as Deus Ex and Dead Island so if you're curious, jump right in.

Re: AMD Catalyst 11.9 RCx
Actually, I'm using Windows 7 drivers with it and they work, including CCC. The exact version I've got is 11.8 Preview, though they were not selected for any particular reason other than that I've already had them downloaded.

Re: AMD Catalyst 11.9 RCx
I know, I only mentioned it because Rob said that he was looking for a CCC that works in 8.
I must say I'm not thrilled. The "everything on one scrollable surface" solution works well on a cell phone (where something like the normal Windows All Programs menu would be a nightmare); it also works well enough on a tablet (I suppose, haven't got one), or at least it's fairly intuitive and fun and has a novelty factor. On a desktop PC with no touch input, however, I don't find it as cool. I think that it would be a decent upgrade to the old style desktop, but not a substitution for the regular Start menu. Strangely enough (probably for technical reasons), MS by default enables both Metro and old style Desktop, but disables the Start menu, exactly the combination that I find least fitting and logical. Also, the idea that you don't have to close an app is... well, there's an internal meme on another forum, "it would be neat, but it's unnecessary". Okay, there's nothing wrong with doing the "neat, though unnecessary", but being so boastful about it that the user can't even close or suspend an app if and when he wants and needs to is another suboptimal choice. For example the app might make noises that might be distracting or irritating if they are coming out of the computer when you are not using the app, yet the system might keep it running in the background as it doesn't need the resources. But MS doesn't allow an app to be manually closed or suspended, for what pretty much comes down to ideological reasons. Other than this, there isn't much separating it from 7, as far as I could see. One good thing that can be said about it is that I haven't experienced any "unexpected events", it does seem to be running quite smoothly, which is very commendable for software in such an early stage.

The reason I asked is that I was eager to check out Windows 7 when it went to the public RC. I've never regretted doing so as it was, to me and IMHO, a very good experience. But, I'm a bit less enthusiastic about the next Windows OS as I'm really quite pleased with what we have now in Windows 7 x64. Even so, I have downloaded two versions of the preview and will hang on to them for at least a few days and do some more reading about them. Also, for me to do this, I want to do it on a completely new HDD....maybe even a SSD... and treat it as a completely separate PC experience so that I can always boot back up to my current OS. |
