When is Windows 8 coming out?

Has there been any word on when it will come out? I've decided that I want to build my next system when Windows 8 is out, so does anyone have a clue when it will be out? Will it be coming out sometime next year?

I'd expect 4th Quarter 2012 but there may be a Beta as early as January 2012.

Definitely next year, but when is unknown. I'd guess around autumn even though some mobile device makers like Nokia seem to expect it for summer. Could even be that a slim Win8 ships early with devices. An open beta shouldn't be too far away and might be best tried out before deciding on your plans.

Are you suggesting I might want to stick with Windows 7 in the end?

Probably not, but there are some radical changes to the start screen/desktop that will put quite a few users off. How configurable it will be in the end is uncertain.

Why can't they leave a working formula alone, I don't understand why they had to change it. It's so ugly now. I'll get used to it but changing the start button like that, I don't want to use profanity so I'll just end it at that.

the preview is available right now if you have a computer you don't mind dual booting it to get a taste..

otherwise from the idiotic touch screen mode that is forced/enabled which i would love to disable..... the OS is pretty damn solid and the new features are pretty damn cool...

I saw a short video of the interface on youtube and I don't like what they've done with the start menu. They should have just left the classic pop up menu that we all knew and loved. But if you say it's solid and you can get used to it then maybe it isn't that bad.

a lot of it isn't done in the preview.... call it a pre beta even.... because majority of the new interface work is all touch screen related at this point.. that's the focus..

The start menu and whatnot will be completed later.....far as the information i've managed to understand..... they are revising and enhacing the current windows 7 start menu for windows 8..... making improvements to the way it works while allowing a touch interface to be streamlined...

theres plenty of discussion about it.... and it's made quite clear this is not AT ALL representative of the final product......

Much of the under the hood changes so far that are worth looking at .... and i like.. is just as simple as the task manager for starters....

As far as i know is windows 8 designed for Tablets. Like windows 7 RC on acer tablet. Its not a operating system for Desktop pc's, Laptops etc. But i suggest you could better use windows 7 for the coming years till in stores windows 8 is automatically installed by the manufactor of the computer. Im fine with windows 7. I rather choose windows vista than windows 8.

Windows 8 is definitely a desktop OS but they have muddied the waters with the inclusion of the Metro interface which is more suited to tablets. Your right though, so far I see no reason for a Vista or 7 user to switch to 8.

I saw an article today that suggested that Windows 8 as a tablet interface may already be too late. Android and the iPhone OS have already dominated the market.

I just hope and pray that when it comes to release that during the installation you can choose what kind of device you'll be using it on so then you either do or don't get the metro UI, Yeah it looks good and being built around JavaScript/JQuery/AJAX and HTML5 is fantastic use of open web standards but at the end of the day a keyboard and mouse has never been able to do what a touch screen does and vice versa.

If the Metro UI is forced on us i'll be staying with Windows 7 and using Fedora for the rest
