Vista networking very unstable
I just installed the Vista beta a few days ago and as many drivers as I could find. I'm using the machine in my sig. The onboard NIC is a 10/100 VIA RHINE II controller and it was recognized by Vista. However the networking sucks. First of all, it has created 5 profiles for the same network
, second... firewall on or off, I'll randomly loose internet connectivity and it will say "Local Only" even though I haven't done anything. I've done all the troubleshooting guides and whatnot, tried reinstalling the driver, disable/enable the adapter...no luck. Anyone got any ideas? |

i'm guessing that you might have updated the device drivers many times or for some reasons the drivers has not been installed properly and the vista keeps reinstalling it. and vista might have kept records of all drivers updated on the network adaptors. as in my case, vista is installed on a system that have 3 network adaptors, then at after 2 of them have Windows drivers updated installed, upon next system reboots i found that network number 4 and 5 have showed up. and all the network settings under 2 networks have been transfered to the new ones, but i have not yet found connection problems under my 4 vista systems.

@PangingJr: No, what I mean is it has 4 different profiles... and the device is just fine, driver stays installed. But my connection will randomly drop and I lose internet, but I can stay connected locally.... I wonder if Vista needs UPnP support? My server machine is running Windows Server 2003 which has no UPnP

you might have already seen these in the Vista's Network Center, i'm not sure this info will help you.
i think so long as the DNS suffix and Gateway MAC address settings are unchanged Windows should not create another network profile... "Each time you connect to a new network, the settings for the network are stored. The next time you connected, Windows will recognize this network and use the same settings again." "Sometimes, you can connect to one network in multiple ways, for example, using wireless or by plugging in a network cable. Even though the method of connection is different, Windows can recognize this as the same network." as for "Local Only"... mine are always shown as "Local and Internet", again i'm not sure if this helps... in the network adaptor's TCP/IPv4 settings i have mine configured for using a different IP address between the DNS server and Default gateway. |

Yeah well its acting weird. Maybe I'll just reformat it, not like I have much on there.
I haven't changed anything... MAC is the same, DNS suffixes unchanged...yet 4 profiles for 1 thing

vista sucks
I have exactly the same problem dropping out of the internet whilst on different networks. I have a laptop which i use between a hard wired office network, wireless home network, and NextG(similar to 3G) network. To make matters worse it seems to effect the office network where resetting the ADSL modem is a daily occurrance. Never had these problems with XP. Any help appreciated

The number one issue with vista networking is leaving IPv6 on. If you do not use it turn it off and it will fix alot of issues. As for drop outs... i have a hward wired network connected through a whireless bridge to a switch to my desk... if that is not complicated enough i am not sure what is but i have 0 drop outs a day. This is a different story if i go strait wireless. Unless your wireless card has a management software the wireless likes to drop or pause every so often.
I would check your device driver though as it might need an update. And as panig i have 3 system on vista with no issue other then on wireless gaming... ( wireless gaming is BAD on vista) |
