for short answer... i don't think you can't, not for a typical installation anyway.
the USB drives are considered to be removable, it's the removable attribute that prevents the Windows from being installed on such a device.

but people have done it for the XP...
a topic found in this google group... microsoft.public.windowsxp.embedded. it's one of an example of the XP...

Microsoft has talked about the Booting from USB Storage Devices here - http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device.../usb-boot.mspx

You haven't heard about Linux, right? (Actually, let's not be so limiting. I think that actually lastest FreeBSD can be installed on USB HDD as well.)

Maybe that's not possible with Windows, but there are operating systems you can install on USB HDD.

Oh, can't I now?

@PangingJr: I know that, I could always modify hive files... but Vista installs much like a regular program and it has much better driver support... so if I try and load a USB driver as my disk controller driver wouldn't that work? I mean if it can install on a partition anywhere even if theres a currently used file system and all... why not on a USB drive?

I'll give it a whirl. Don't have much to lose

if you have time and effort please do that. i really like to see you will made it.
however, i think it's also because the Vista is beta... something in its beta codes might prevent you from doing what you want to...

Maybe not. This beta is surprisingly...how do I say.... unshackled? We'll see when I get to swap my drives in the enclosure and test 'er out
