I ment when your say booting from DVD and then setup the partitions, if the partitions are already formated, would vista unpack all the files to the primary partition reguardless of the location your installing to (for example, C drive is primary but your installing windows vista to G drive) I know that when you install xp freshly, that it copies files to the C partition or the install partition then continues installing.

and i've never used Vista DVD to setup hard drive partitions yet, never boot system with the Vista DVD either. however, i think vista might not copies (or unpack) files to hard drive at all, but since its installation using the image-based... it may just decompressed (using system RAM as its temp entirely, or might also use hard drive space as well, i don't really know yet) files onto your selected partition... read this article... Inside Vista’s new image-based install http://www.apcstart.com/site/dwarne/...-based-install Vista’s installation process is dramatically different to any previous version of Windows: rather than being an ‘installer’, the install DVD is actually a preinstalled copy of Windows that simply gets decompressed onto your PC. |

that would be a hell of alot faster then an installation method...
that would also explain why it's fast. and being that i've plenty of memory and fast to, that would also explain a few things.

It still doesn't explain why it took me an hour and a half to get it up and running.
Also, since it installed without a CD KEY, will I still need a key to activate it? I'm noticing that I have 12 days to activate this copy of Vista. There's also a Product ID listed just below this notice. If the RC1 gets released as they say....Sept 7th or 9th whichever....would it be prudent to go ahead with activation now? The expiration of this copy is actually stated to be June, 2007. |

if you want other to help you figure out why it happens like that (Hour and a Half to Install -- Pre RC1) at your end, then you must provide more info, this will be just about everything in details, about your system hardwares, system and BIOS configurations, disk drives and partition configurations, and all, i guess. maybe others will see something on the more info... but atm like i said i haven't a clue... so i don't know what to ask you. |

I've done the hardware evaluation app that comes with it.
Some possibilities would be due to some currently unsupported USB devices. It may have taken the system longer due to attempting to find drivers for devices. I've mentioned in the other thread ("UNKNOWN DEVICE") that my UMAX 4000U is not working presently. I've just sent off a feedback about that. Also, I have an older PCI USB card installed because I needed some additional connections inside the computer for front connections for USB devices. EXAMPLE: My USB Card Reader had nowhere to be connected as long as I also connected the built-in USB connections on the computer case. I was able to find a PCI USB card that had an additional 'bare wire' connector like the motherboard connections. It also provides additional USB connections at the rear of the computer. If you're about say, "You sound like you're all set for a LOT of USB devices" you're right! LOL! It will be interesting to see how long it will take for RC1 to install as long as I can get it downloaded upon its release. |

UPDATE:
It won't work. When I install the drivers for the UMAX 4000U using the newest drivers available -- from 2002 -- it causes Vista to block the drivers from working.I did provide feedback to MS about the issue. |
