Hour and a Half to Install -- Pre RC1
Man, I couldn't believe it would take so long to install it on a separate hard drive as a fresh installation. But, it took an hour and a half before I finally got to see my first Vista Desktop on my system.
So far, though, it does seem to be impressive with some nice new features. It's still kind of strange territory though and I'm still feeling my way around. One thing I'm kind of concerned about: I can't seem to access certain folders on my other hard drives. Example: My Pictures folder on my C:\ drive. Vista is installed on my E:\ drive and only a few folders show up in the Documents and Settings sub-folders on C:\. |

the first release was terrible to install, but the latest build installs in about 20 minutes. might be an issue with your rig dyre.

Also, however it happened, the folders on C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\ are all showing up again. That's a relief! EDIT: BTW, in my Device Manager, my X800 XL (using Beta 2 drivers from ATI) I'm showing only one instance of the card. Also, there's an Unknown Device listed. What's the status of this and is there a solution?

Judas your rig seems to love Vista then
took about 30 minutes for me but your rig could cream mine anyway![]() Dyre about your X800XL i have the same prob with my X800GT there is only 1 X800GT listed and i have an unknown video device but my secondary display works fine even at 1080i. Could be a glitch but remember the ATI drivers are BETA and they were designed for Beta 2 not for RC1 (not that they worked well for Beta 2 either)

so far this is the best vista release yet, they musta made this public because beta 2 seemed kinda gimped.
In any case, i've been showing it off to various people that walk into the shop, and now i can explain to them why it wouldn't be such a bad thing to hold off on perhaps buying a brand spanking new machine just yet. Or getting a damn good decent one that'll be slick and easy to run vista on it.

I figured it would likely be a driver issue. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me. So far, though, I'm actually impressed with Vista. This is my first hands-on experience with it. It's unfamiliar in several ways, but easy to find your way around if you're already familiar with Windows. |

all you other guys have far superior systems compared to us. although, dyre, that did take quite a bit to install. on my rig public release 1 beta 2, took about 45min. to install.
is the public beta 2 pre-rc1 still up for download? i know it was like the first 100k d/ls that got it, and then the doors were closed. |

Vista > Your Face.
Took about 15 minutes to install, took me 24 hours to figure out how to connect to the internet, glad MS came up with a solution so quickly. Now just if creative would fire their driver support team and hire people who are more motivated.

k, i even made a note of this.
I saw this thread, downloed the pre-rc1, and burnt it to disk, i made a mental note of the time on the clock here (3:04pm) when i fired the dvd into the machine, and fired it up. By 3:15pm, i was tweaking vista to my likeing. I did the ultimate install which i'd venture a guess as being the most elaborate and bloated installation.

it takes me about 20 mins...
i use UltraISO in XP to decompress the Vista's ISO to a folder and run the Vista's setup program to decompress the image of Vista onto the hard drive. just choose the "Custom.... Install a clean copy..." in below example, within XP x64 i created a new partition for the Vista (as seen as the 3rd primary partition in the pic. i spent 1-2 mins to create this partition), then restore a XP x86 (the partition image file was made when i first made the clean install of the OS, so the image file size is quite small. Acornis true image only takes 2 mins or less to restore the OS to this newly created partition. the boot.ini file of this OS image has already been edited for BIOS to direct booting the OS from the 3rd primary partition), then reset the new OS and partition to boot from on the next system boots, this only take a second when using PQBoot for Windows. and then restart/reboot the system in to the OS and run the Vista setup program and load RAID's drivers within the Windows.... and it was done in about 15 mins or so. ![]() ![]()

I chose the Ultimate install, too. But, I don't think that had anything to do with how long it took to install.
I'm used to XP installing in around 35 minutes or less. |

A stock XP takes less than 7 minutes for me if I don't include the BIOS and RAID initializing.
An nLited XP with most of the crap stripped out and options preconfiged as much as possible I can get done in 4 mins timing the same way

during this beta test on the Vista if you have to spend a very long time when installing it from the DVD, then next time you might want to try running the Vista setup from the existing installed Windows and see if this can save your time.
just choose the option "Custom (advanced) Install a clean copy of Windows....", not the Upgrade options. |

Judas how did you install Vista? Whilst running XP or booting from the DVD?

Judas has a very fast system. if i install it from within a smaller footprint of the XP and the Vista's source installation files are resided in a different RAID array or on a different hard drive than the one where the OS is to be installed, then i probably have it done in very close to 10 mins.

![]() not sure what you mean, but i unpacked the vista's ISO to a folder on D partition (logical drive. see the 2nd pic of my post above) of the same RAID array, and run the setup there from within XP of the 3rd primary partition. |
