Discovered my 'UNKNOWN' Device....

It's my UMAX 4000U USB flatbed scanner.

It's not listed in the options to choose from, either. UMAX isn't even on the list of the Imaging Devices.

I also checked the current UMAX website and the latest drivers only support XP.

This is definitely something the MS will need to address. This scanner is one of the last of the LEGAL size scanners I could get my hands on a few years ago. AND, I use it quite often and need the legal size length of it.

Time to go to MS Vista Feedback, I guess.

It wouldn't surprise me. I've owned two UMAX scanners -- one required a ISA SCSI card and this one is USB.

What did surprise me is that there is NO UMAX scanner option at all in the selections menu for scanners.

I have reported it to MS Feedback. We'll see if anything develops.

seems like you want Microsoft to include every devices drivers to the Windows install?

problem with hardware drivers do exist on every operating system, not just Windows operating system.
building an operating system that includes a lot of hardware drivers in the installation source files (or in the kernel, in the case of unix-like operating system) is not easy and can cause more harm than good. don't you think so?

No, just the ones I use. LOL!

Seriously, though, I don't love the idea of having to buy a new scanner.....with legal size ones hard to find at a decent price....just for Vista. The scanner works great in XP with the XP native drivers.

And, being that it's USB, I was hoping the drivers would be accessible either from MS or via an Online Download. But, if they do become available, it might be only after Vista is released officially.

At this point, I think UMAX concentrates on digital cameras....not the scanners. At least, per their WEBsite, it looks that way. Even the XP drivers are 4-5 years old.

EDIT: I've sent an email to UMAX support. We'll see what happens now.

UPDATE:

RC-1 still has no support for the UMAX scanners.

I also haven't heard back from UMAX....at least not yet. And, that disturbs me.

It certainly didn't sit well with me.

I responded that Vista has been in testing for quite sometime now and is also in PUBLIC testing presently. I would hope that someone at UMAX would actually be involved in using at least a version of the public beta or recently released versions of VISTA.

I can't believe that they would be waiting for the official releases before commencing to code drivers.

It really doesn't speak well for the company, that's for sure!

New Issue...existed in Pre-RC1, as well:

Will someone do this, please:

Access www.accuweather.com and select a radar image. Your own area should be acceptable.

Once you get the radar image you want, right click on it and send it to your printer.

Do you get any color along with the text? I don't! I get only text on a white sheet of paper.

These images are .GIF files and should be printing just fine.

I've checked the settings on my printer...which is connected to my other computer on the LAN.

Let me know your results, please.

Thanks! I'm going to have to dig around to see just why it's doing this.

BUT, is your printer connected to your computer, or do you have a LAN? My printer is not connected directly to this computer....it's on the LAN. So, it could very well be a driver issue due to the Network.

EDIT: Well, it's not a network driver issue.

I just did a Copy/Paste function and it's clearly not picking up the colors even in the copy.

UPDATE on UMAX Scanner issue:

I just got another email from UMAX Support. According to the email, UMAX has not even decided yet whether to test VISTA and, whether they will support it.

Very bad news, I'm afraid.

about the LAN question yes the printer i printed to is on my LAN.
I have 2 printers one next to the pc i use and one on my backup pc. I've sent it to my backup pc's printer over my Lan and the colours came out fine.

This is really strange then.

I haven't installed any other programs after installing RC1. It's simply all native Vista with IE 7. So, could it be a lack of image support? (Which I really, really doubt, but, when something like this happens I tend to grasp for straws.)

UPDATE:

OK....this failure to capture the colors in the radar is an IE7 issue....NOT Vista. I just booted back into XP Pro using IE7 and the same exact situation happens.

So, at least I know it's not Vista that's at fault or to blame.

Now, can anyone using IE7 try this out?
