More information, please.

Exactly what kind of error did you get? Or, in what way was it unsuccessful?

Did you look to see if there was an MD5 hash and verify that the download was not corrupt?

Hope this helps:

I didn't try to upgrade via XP at all. Rather, I burned the iso file to a DVD and then booted to the DVD and ran the installation from there.

I also didn't try to install it as an upgrade to XP. I put it on a different hard drive and am presently dual booting.

And, as EcPercy suggests: Make sure you have a good copy of the iso file.

How about providing your system specs here?

how do you go about finding that out

anyways what is the chance that the previous attempts at installing the betas were also corrupt

google “Burn slower or risk data loss, warns Microsoft”
that could be your problem.

if you don't want to waste your time to find out, then within Windows XP you could try extracting the ISO to a folder on another partition, then quit your antivirus and all other running programs and disconnect your network connection if you want to. and then go to the folder and run the setup.exe, then choose the option "Custom (advanced) Install a clean copy of Windows....", and if the existing Windows is installed on a RAID drive, then you'll need to load your RAID drivers, and then select the existing partition of the XP, then since you chose to install a clean copy of Windows Vista, the Vista's setup program will copy the existing XP's files to a folder called Windows.old in drive C before it starts to install the Vista, then after the installation is done and Vista is running, then if you want to, you can completely remove the Windows.old folder.
note-- if you follow the above instruction you use it as your own risk... the Vista's setup program will not offer you, or configure your system for a dual-boot between the XP and Vista, it'll configure your system as a single boot system of the Vista only.

anyway, before you try that you might want to create a partition image of the existing Windows XP, so that you can go back to it...

for a better info on some parts of the above...

.....it'll configure your system as a single boot system of the Vista only. however, as mentioned earlier, i think i'll give you more information on this, since you chose to install Vista on the existing XP's partition, the setup program will detect that you have another Windows on the partition that you're about to use this same partition to install the Vista, it'll then offer you to copy the existing XP's files (in the XP partition only, not other partition that exists on the hard drives) and to keep these files in the Windows.old folder, and this is just in case that you want to use your old files at later time... you cannot refuse this offer, but to accept it (at least i've seen and been doing that on these few Vista's builds that i've tried, beta 2, 5536, 5600)... if you click cancel... the Vista will also quit the installation, and this will happen just like this on both 32-bit and x64 builds.

This is true ^^^^ if I burned the iso at max speed I got corrupted installs, burn them at x1 speed and not a problem.....
Give it a go whatcha got to lose...
Also, backing your xp install up to another partition, or an external usb drive is a very prudent move. Me, I have mine to an ext usb drive but do not intend to re-install XP...I like Vista to much now and am waiting to hand MR Gates my hard earned cash when the retail release is out......

Seems a bit unlikely, Beta 2 installed fine for me with the same ATI card. I haven't tried RC1 yet since my cable connection is down, and will be for the next week or so.

Vista should install fine with ATi cards, driver upgrades from ATi might cause problems however. I've installed different builds of Vista with no problems on both Mobility Radeon based laptops and Radeon based desktops.

Agreed, Vista installed fine on my wifes laptop which is powered by an ATI mobility x200 graphics chipset.

Which ati card is it?

i've been able to successfully install both the beta/pre-rc1 and RC1 version on all the ATI cards i've got, (before installing the Catalyst drivers)..

all of which have completed the installation freshly within 10-30 minutes

Pre-RC1 and RC1 have both installed fine on my system with X800 XL ATI card.

The RC1 ATI Drivers actually install. But, they cause problems. So, I'm using the MS drivers for now.

i extracted the Iso 32 bit to my hard drive and iam still recieving the same error messages ..... frankly if the problem is with my Ati card then it must be Microsofts problem ...... they are obviously going back to when software vendors we're writing code to suit their prefered hardware manufacturers .... i hope this is not the case because i will be not pleased if that is the case

if you haven't tried this, you might want to try what Hapatingjaky's suggests in this http://www.hardwareheaven.com/windows-vista-forum/118776-installing-vista-x64-setup-error.html

Well...I did manage to install Vista on my Dell E1405/640M laptop. However my AMD desktop comp. made BSOD at installation. Probably during install of the graphics drivers.

I'm having some mixed feelings about Windows Vista after I've tried it for a few hours. I kind of like the new Aero/glass theme but it also seems to be a major performance hog. And my harddrive is pretty much loading all the time.

I have "only" 1GB of RAM in my laptop and the GFX shares its videomemory with the RAM.
