VISTA RC2: Comments and Questions
I'm about to install this myself and was actually surprised there aren't any other posts about it yet. (Or I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other.)
Anyway, I was curious as to how many installed this as an update as opposed to a new installation? |

Well, I installed RC2 this afternoon as a clean install, so I am no help to you Dyre Straits.
![]() Now, you can use the same key that you have now. I've been using the same key since Beta 1. Went through the activation process just fine too. All I can say so far is that runs pretty darn good. It seems much "smoother" than RC1. The only devices that don't work for me is my scanner and webcam. Since I rarely use either one, I am not really caring. And besides I still have MCE as a dual-boot.

Man that really sucks, to say the least. Hope u can get it sorted out. My only problem with installing Vista is if I started the install in WinXP, and left the CD in when it rebooted it would screw up the bootloader. So I just took it out whenever the computer needed to reboot. But that's an easy fix.

OK.....well, call it a brain cramp or whatever you want. Here's the scoop on my reported problem above:
On all previous installations, when I would open My Computer, it would show my HDDs just the way I have them in XP Pro. That is, C: would show up as a normal storage drive....not the system drive. E: (Where I installed VISTA) would show up as System. Well, that all changed with this installation and I don't know why. HOWEVER.....Big Sigh of Relief!....the drives are all OK...and VISTA DID install on my E: drive. I had to do a little deeper inspection to determine that it was so. NOW....my newest problem is that I can't increase my Screen Resolution above 1024x768. I had no problem doing so in previous releases. I need my 1280x1024! At least, though, I'm still dual booting without any problem. So, call it a false alarm if you want. |

I have been using RC1 on both my laptop and desktop for about 2 weeks. Had some limited driver problems, (Xerox onetouch scanner, VoipVoice USB phone) but everything else was OK, no real differences that I can see, except that RC2 is NOT compatible with CA antivirus 7.2, even though RC1 was. It looks like the UACP raises its ugly head again.
Worst thing is, you can't use Windows DVD Maker unless you have a 256Mb Video Card. That sucks as my nasty little Intel 822/825 video card worked just fine under XP. |

@ dyre: have you tried installing the latest available vista drivers for your gfx card? and i know what you mean about missing 1280x1024, i feel the same way about my 1600x1200

Been running stable for me so far, however, no drivers will detect my X800GTO properly, so no Aero. Catalyst RC1 drivers do not work, XP drivers work ok, but do not show my graphics memory, nor does the automatica stock ones. Guess I'll have to wait for ATi to release some new ones?

I did install the RC1 ATI drivers with CCC. Discovered that my system DEFAULTED to TV CLONE mode....which restricted screen resolution to 1024x768. I Disabled that and can now select any resolution my monitor supports. I'm also NOT getting all that screen corruption like I was getting with earlier CATALYST installed. So.....still working out the quirks. |

hi everyone i'm back, damn internet has been down (curse you Sky Broadband)
anyway just installed RC2 and i have no aero glass effects?!?!?! vista detects my card as a X800GT and i get the same index performance rating as i did in RC1 and 5728 but it won't let me use aero and the option to turn it on has gone? I've installed the latest ATI drivers which work just as well with my X800GT but aero won't turn on like it has been disabled for some strange reason. Anyone know why? Apart from that RC2 is a lot better than 5728 and RC1, alot faster and it finally supports UT2004

aero does work, sounds like you have a bad installation. I know however its turned off if you have 512 meg of ram or less.

When i reinstalled Vista (from RC1 to RC2), it turned out it had re-assigned the driveletters because it obviously wants to sit on C:\ itself. But booting up XP learned that it still was seeing itself on C:\ as well, it just depends from which OS you look. You simply must not give it the chance to do that. You reach that goal by formatting then removing the BSD first. That's the way i put Vista on K:\ again.

Any Working linksys 64bit drivers? I have a PCI adapter, no official 64 bit support from linksys yet, I would switch to 32bit but the download links are no longer active through microsoft.

Hey Guys
I've been trying to get RC2 up and running all weekend, but the first time I have to reboot and my desktop comes back up the screen resolution is so big that I can do nothing with it. I'm thinking that this what Dyre Straits was having problems with. Could someone direct me to where i can deactivate this TV Clone he mentioned? One other thing, could someone tell me where I can get the Realtek audio driver, this Build 5744 won't d/l it like it did with RC1 and the 5728 build. I would appreciate some help ASAP as if I have to reboot I'm back to square one again. drwho
