I'm currently using the VISTA Ultimate Final. I just got it installed late last night and need to give it a good work out before giving any assessment.

One thing, however, there still is no support for my UMAX 4000U flatbed scanner. Other than that, it seems everything else is working. BUT, I haven't installed the lastest ATI drivers yet. I'm using the MS drivers at the moment.

EDIT: Update -- I have installed the latest ATI drivers now. Will have to do some testing after work.

Will try it when it's released on MSDN and I get a replacement for my broken second hard disk (this weekend, if I'm lucky).

They are going to have to do something about bringing the computer out of standby mode. Neither the keyboard nor mouse buttons would do it. I was away at work and the computer went into standby mode. In order to get it back up and running I had to press the Reset button on the front of the case and reboot. Not good!

Really? it works ok for me. they also fixed some DVI out issues to HDRV I was having as well as a few other minor things.

Thankfully im using an ATI set well in advance of the offical public release, they sucked. these new ones are great.

I'm going to have to reinstall the whole shebang again. I decided to delete a few of the previous windows.old files created from a couple of installations previously and, for whatever reason now, my profile is missing.

Did they REALLY use some kind of dependency on something from the OLD backups for profiles?

AND, I only deleted the ones from a couple months ago...not the last installation.

At this point, I can't get into VISTA because of the missing profile. ???

Well they are beta, im sure when ATI feel they are ready for the public they will release them. I wish they would too, but I am not in a position to tell ATI what to do mate, I just try and advise them, when I can. I agree with you though, I think the RC drivers are appalling. The drivers I have do have opengl.... so its looking good for you guys.

I really like the new OS. Its good looking, fast, and rock solid for the basic stuff I have attempted on it. However, it still needs some work in the driver department. The funny thing is that I was expecting problems with my scanner, printer, and usb devices but instead I got hit with audio/video issues(out of all things!) Once nvidia and creative get the act together I'll be able to get a better feel for it but for now I'm at least left with a satisfied feeling that it's a good OS with tons of potential.

I'm enjoying the new rtm build enormously. I've gone with the x64 version and as I haven't got anything particularly exotic in terms of hardware. I'm not troubled too much by lack of drivers (although I wish Hauppauge would get their act together on this front!)

Other than that, the XP x64 drivers seem to work fine if I'm stuck for a Vista x64 driver, and F8 during boot to turn off enforced driver signing helps when using early release drivers.

I notice that the pagefile bug from previous builds (which doesn't allocate enough hard drive space when set to 'system-managed') has made it through to the rtm build. It's no biggie, though, and I'm sure it will be fixed by a Windows Update.

Other than the minor niggle with drivers, I find the system rock solid, stable and very responsive.

I just completed reinstalling Vista and getting the updates as well as installing the latest ATI drivers.

Maybe I'll get a chance to play some games this time around.

I installed Vista RTM Ultimate and everything went smooth though I can't connect to the internet no matter what I try. Also, when exiting BF2 it causes screen corruption and requires a manual reboot. Aside from that I was impressed with how smooth the OS was.

Did a clean install of RTM last night - wiped XP from the drive. Thirty minutes after inserting the DVD, i was sitting at the Vista desktop. Impressive stuff!

My biggest issues seemed to be caused by installing old versions of software, such as Alcohol. I installed it, then it cautioned me about the driver that was being installed. I went ahead and clicked yes anyway, and then wham blue screen. Subsequent reboots resulted in the same blue screen as it re-attempted to install the driver, even in safe mode!

I resorted to re-inserting the Vista DVD and using System Restore to undo the Alcohol installation. Worked a charm.

Thus my tip: leave System Restore turned on, at least for now! Don't try to be a stingy performance hero by turning it off.

Other apps that I successfully installed include MagicISO, Office 2007, Live Messenger, TweakVI, Nero 7, Nod32 2.7, Steam.

I'm yet to try loading CS and the ATI drivers.

One thing about Vista I have found so far to be very annoying! If you do attempt to install a driver that Vista doesn't like, it seems you CANNOT uninstall the sucker! I've tried several times to install the UMAX flatbed scanner drivers and get a Windows Protection warning. It will NOT let me even attempt to complete the installation. BUT, if I try to uninstall them, they won't uninstall, either. Then, on the next reboot, I get the prompt for Unknown Device drivers. Even there, trying to turn off that prompt fails. It just keeps coming back like the Energizer Bunny!

Well my tought

firts off , i am very impressed by the speed of the RTM, i installed RC1 and tell there is a difference from dark to light....
Also i gamed a bit on ut2004 and was very stable, used the updated catalyst beta driver and worked like champ, no problems at all...
my board is a asrock dualsataII and the ethernet driver was installed with windows.. the IQ its impresive and i disabled UAC firts thing i did.
I gave to my USER full access and permission, and that help me out where i need to access and edit or move files in all my hardrive....
Performance , its more resposive that XP sp2 going to sites and playing music , all its fast , startup too everything that i do on my XP this vista do it without a single problem, i really like the OS, and i was a litle skeptical about how good would it work on RTM and i was thinking to wait untill SP1 or 2 but as how it is now, it's perfect , if some program dont work , well that is becouse is a new OS and software designer need to update or patch its programs to make them fully compatable with VISTA, that is not Microsoft business, they have done a really nice OS, I really recommend the OS

I have the same motherboard as you and used the included drivers for ethernet but I could not get any internet access even with different drivers. How did you get it to work?

I even tried a spare NIC card and it didn't work either...made me really sour

Yes, I upgraded a friend's machine with Vista x64 last week - he has the same motherboard as you and the onboard ethernet is unreliable to say the least. We purchased a cheap NIC instead and it worked like a charm, although we had to use the XP x64 edition driver as there wasn't a Vista version available.

I don't like the fact that Windows take up half my system memory when having 1GB of RAM.

Why do you have so much ram if you don't want it to be used?

Coding Horror: Why Does Vista Use All My Memory?

Check out that for a decent explanation of why/how Vista uses your ram. You should be able to dig up some more stuff via Google as well, if you're interested.

Hmm seems that Vista uses the memory a bit more wisely than XP. But I don't want to have a bunch of small applications running in the background that I won't even use anyway.
