Vista 64 and games?

Just wondering,
if I am to pick up Windows Vista64 bit edition, would most of my games such as DOD:S, CS:S, Company of Heros work? Along with MS Office2003?

Just need this cleared up for myself.

Thanks,

Okay, I know why the games aren't working for me (in Opengl, that is).
Go to the executable and right click on it. Change the SECURITY settings to accept all on every option you get. Do the same with the FOLDER the game is contained in on the hard drive (it's not necessary to do this to the executables in the folder). This may not be necessary but just in case... Also do this to the subfolders within the game folder.

Restart the game.

Worked for me. Now have fully functional q4 and prey in Vista64.
Am currently working on the d3d side with FarCry. Will let you guys know.

64-bit Far Cry works fine for me, I didn't even have to reinstall with Vista, just clicked the exe and it worked.

Had to turn HDR lighting off though, everything was bright, except for the black sky.

Black sky????

When I first installed FarCry, the D3D drivers could not load the textures of the game due to Windows defender blocking the access. I did the same trick mentioned above and got it working great now! I even installed the AMD 64 bit textures etc. for XP64! Looks fantastic!

Do NOT install patch 1.4! Go only to 1.3. 1.4 rapes the mipmapping and shadows in order to make the game run fast in multiplay.

Set HDR to 2 then. It should never have turned the sky black.

I'm having the same problem with patch 1.4, and setting HDR to a lower level doesn't solve anything. I've turned off all AA in the game and the Nvidia control panel of my Geforce 7600 GT OC. The blue sky is always black if, and only if, I have HDR enabled at any value.

AMD 64 X2 3800+ 1GB
Mushkin Enhanced memory
Asus M2N-E motherboard
BFG Geforce 7600 GT OC video card
Windows Vista Home Premium Ed. 32-bit

Hrmnnn... I use an ATi card. Know nothing about Nvidia cards.
I see Zelig is using an Nvidia card too.
No wonder I can't see the problem on my own machine.

I'd say follow his advice and just disable HDR.

For future reference, my machine =
AMD 64 x2 Dual core 4600+
ATi Radeon x1900xt
4GB DDR400 RAM
Samsung 19" LCD digital monitor
Vista 64 home premium

That's what I usually do for outdoor scenes, but I just got a new computer, and it's tough accepting a lower standard of gaming than it is capable of . It does look smokin' in indoor settings though! No more wandering around in a dark, low contrast cave and getting shot at by hidden enemies
Somebody suggested rolling back to Nvidia driver 91.31 or earlier, so maybe I'll try that once I'm prepared to possibly reinstall Vista -- once more

I have Vista 64 Ultimate. My games kept crashing with my x1900xtx. I installed the new 7.2 cats and I can run Company of Hereos without a problem. I still can get my Supreme Commander demo to run without xrashing. I can play for about 6 minutes before it crahses and the fan starts spinning really loud on the video card. It might be my X-Fi Xtreme Gamer crashing it though since that card sucks horse cock.

I'm starting to think Vista may have some gaming issues. That shouldn't surprise anyone, but I'd like to get to the bottom of this crap.
So far, we have 2 people with the hdr black sky problem. What we have in common:

Windows Vista
Athlon 64 X2 CPU
Nvidia GPU

That's it. The problem must be related to one of those general things. I highly doubt a texture problem like this is due to hardware itself, so I think it can be narrowed down to Vista or drivers. I'm not prepared to change OS, so I guess the only option is trying more drivers? I've tried the latest Nvidia drivers for Vista, plus I tried rolling back to the previous version. What else can I try? I'm sick of playing with facking drivers. I'm sick of having to fight hours for every moment of great gaming experience that I paid through my nose for! FACK!

Quake 4 won't even run on 64bit Windows Vista Ultimate for me, neither will Knights Of the Old Republic, Knights Of the Old Republic 2, Dungeon Siege 2: Broken World will run, but always crashes ATI's video driver, Call Of Duty 1, won't even run either, it just crashes before it loads your current mission.

I gave up on gaming in Vista. Far Cry ran fine with my x850xt. I didn't put it back on with my new rig's 8800GTS, but put on Oblivion and FEAR. Both crash after near an hour of play with with the nvlddmkm has restarted error. On the bright side, Mahjongg works flawlessly. I kept an XP partition so now I can play Oblivion the way it was meant to be played, lol.

edit - I place this firmly on the NVidia drivers. I had no issues with the ATI drivers. I used to leave Dreamscene running for hours on the ATI card, but it's really flaky on the NVidia card.

Only game I have had problems with is UFO afterlight, it crashes on start, you can get it to run in compatability mode but the graphics are fluffed up.

I do have a big pile of games that do work on Vista 64 and they are
Sid Meier's Pirates - with graphical glitches
C&C Generals and C&C Generals Zero Hour
All three Battle For Middle Earth games, and this includes Rise Of the Witch King
Sacred Underworld/Gold using 2.28 patch
Neverwinter Nights and it's expansion using 1.68 patch
Neverwinter Nights 2
Dungeon Siege Legends Of Aranna
Dungeon Siege 2
Company Of Heroes with 1.5 patch
Titan Quest with latest patch

It's going to be awhile, before I put Windows Vista 64 back on, there is a mess brewing now with EA not supporting 64bit operating systems for C&C 3. I'm also waiting for the 64bit Vista drivers for my HT OMEGA Claro to come out next month.
