Reinstall Vista after Upgrades?
I just did a complete system upgrade today to include Mobo, CPU, RAM, & Vid card. Plugged my Vista RC1 (build 5600) HDD in to start it up and Vista won't load. Not even in safe mode! In normal startup, it starts the little gold scroll bar and then I catch a flash of a BSOD before the system restarts. In safe mode, the loading files start to scroll and then it stops on one that makes me think (according to the name that I can't see long enough to write down) it is doing some sort of disk checksum. I can confirm all the new hardware is good 'cause it boots fine when I plug in my XP HDD . Has anyone heard of having to reinstall Vista after doing major upgrades? I know it is a good idea anyway but I wouldn't think it would result in an unbootable system. Any ideas?

As for the original posters problem I do know that vista has an included RAM tester, that could possibly be the problem. Try stress testing your RAM under XP. Just a suggestion. |

I like to do a fresh install from scratch (on a newly formatted partition) after doing major hardware changes.
It just seems "cleaner" to me. Less trouble. |

Usually, if I replace a piece of hardware, like a new vid card, sound card, etc, I tend to create a new base image after that, just to stay current. Ghost 2001 rocked, and 2003 is great and faster in terms of compressing, if I remember right. C: and D: drives (two physically separate drives) are both FAT32. I just boot to a floppy, have GHOST.EXE in the D:\GHOST folder, and can do a GHOST of drive C: (Local > Partition > To Image) right over to drive D:. Since it's FAT32, it auto-breaks it into 2 gig chunks for me. I just boot back into Windows XP when it's done, and what do you know? TWO of those segments fit very nicely on each DVD-RW I use. It's a great way to do things, and has probably saved me DOZENS and DOZENS of hours of time. Sometimes a little "spring cleaning" is a good thing indeed.

Norton ghost is a very useful tool. Im not sure what version im using, it had something like Ghost+keygen???? Whatever that means LMAO. Only joking net police. It has came in handy on a number of occasions and i'll be replacing yet another clunking, whining and moaning Maxtor hard-drive soon. The upgrade disk tool is great.

No keygen needed at all for those. Just run that bad boy at the command line outside of Windows XP (Boot floppy like I do, or boot CD/DVD) and you are good to go. I've even made some batch files to make it easy. You still use your copy? Should show up on the main screen when you run it at the command line, I reckon'. It has turned out to be one of the most time saving, indispensible tools I have ever bought. What a great product. |

Reinstalled
I just went ahead and reinstalled RC1 and it went fine. It wasn't a production drive anyway. Now I'm having ATI driver problems. I'm trying not to get too upset about it though considering I'm still running RC1. Just a little impatient for that retail version to arrive and hopefully fix my issues (may be wishful thinking, I guess).
Oh, BTW... the file it would hang on during the boot into safe mode was crcdisk.sys. Sounds like it was doing a CRC check to me and I think it had to do with a formatting error when I first installed Vista on that HDD (long story).
