Low End Vista Install test
I've recently come into owning a older machine, that actually fits right into the recommended lowest minimum requirements for vista (course i could probably easily manage an install that's lower but i'm curious how the performance and how well it'll work )
Anyways, while maintaining full hardware support this is what i ended up with: Asus CUV4X-C Via baised Motherboard (latest bios) Intel Pentium 3 1000mhz 2x256mb SD-Ram (512mb total) Radeon 9550 256mb AGP (4x agp mode) IRQ 10 Generic 100mbps NIC IRQ 7 Generic standard Creative PCI audio card IRQ 9 80Gb WD Caviar IDE drive (ATA66 UDMA 4 Mode) 16x BenQ DVD-RW DL IDE Drive (ATA66 UDMA 4 Mode) Standard Floppy Drive Started the vista install @ 1:27PM (13:27) Now the creative card should have generic vista drivers (i didn't find a creative supplied vista driver thus far) The Radeon 9550 is officially listed as being supported by the Catalyst 7.1's And i'm sure there will be a vista driver for the nic as well. So it should go smoothly, i'm just curious how well it'll perform, if it's a viable alternative at these speeds vs XP

Well the sound card and network card failed to install.... can't find drivers for them..
however, using the 9550 vista supplied drivers, Aero mode works flawlessly ( i was under the impression that aero was not available at all if you were running sub 1gb of memory. )

only 2 dimms
and all i've got on hand is 2x256mb sticks.. when i stuck in the 1x 512, the computer beeped like it didn't have memory. Anyways, i've given up trying to get an old sound card to work, and i installed a via NIC and got that working, tried a SB Live Value but yet again no driver support. The computer works great, fairly fast, while nearly everything is 1 on the performance tab, the HD scored 5.2 lol. However now i'm running into a annoying issue where the Catalyst 7.1's refuse to install stating: Failed to find any installable components even though the catalyst drivers state they support the card....

too bad that it has only 2 and you don't have those old RAM with you anyways. i 'think' the motherboard platform can take more than 512 MB, not like the old Intel 81x.

I have to wonder... do you think it's really worth installing an OS worth about as much as the hardware you're installing it on? Especially considering chances are pretty good the hardware already had some kind of working OS beforehand...

the idea was to see how well Vista ran at these specs.. and i must add that it runs excellently, just a few capability issues that could be easily resolved with a driver update and the sound issue is related to creative garbage anyways.... just throw in a model that is capable with vista and your off.
The hardware is worth more here, While Vista Ultimate is activated at all on this machine, it's worth trialling. I doubt that i'll activate vista and just reinstall XP back onto it. Just wanted to see how well it did. And with Aero mode enabled, it runs very excellent even without the 7.1's installed.

Good to know Judas. My brother was interested in home premium, while using a Pentium3 1GHz and 512 Mb of Kingston 133mhz RAM. Hes also got an AGP 4X FX5200 128MB Direct X9 Card so he should be good on AERO. How are Nvidia Drivers On Vitsa? i own ATI myself...

Take a look at DH's Nvidia driver review/article..
however from what i've heard, it's not exactly steller... but it's good, from what i gathered, ATI is better of then nvidia, even if it's by a smidge.
