Is this possible?
I have windows XP and a second internal drive for storage. C and E
Leaving aside the other external drives, is it possible to insert a 3rd HDD, install Vista on that, then during each boot of the PC, decide to load Vista or XP, without changing cables/switches each time and without changing the installation of XP as it is now?

I dont see why not. You can set one to load by default, or you can have it ask you each time.
