There's no doubt Beryl offers more eye-candy than Aero, but I don't find the functionality of Beryl to be much of an improvement over Aero. Plus Beryl (and Emerald) were a bitch to configure properly, and seem easier to `break`than Aero.

I've had my first Linux experience in the last month or so using OpenSuSE 10.2, KDE, and Beryl.

It's a bit easier to configure Beryl on SuSE than on Ubuntu as it is possible to use all GUI tools to make the process nearly automatic. It is supposed to be this way in Ubuntu as well, but recent changes to the Linux Kernel, the way the videocard drivers are setup, and the state of flux that the recent merger of Compiz and Beryl into OpenComposite with unmatching stuff on the automatic repositories make it necessary for a user to use command line tools to download and configure the thing. This will change to easier methods again when the smoke clears!

However, the OpenComposite 3D desktop is experimental still, whereas the Vista Aero is a finished product. Then again, Compiz/Beryl is by far more advanced in the features provided than the Vista Aero 3D desktop is. Yes, I bought Vista Platinum and so use both.

So, OpenComposite is better but a bit tricky and experimental at this stage. Vista Aero is just, well you turn the computer on and there it is.

I'd have to say at this point that the only reason I would go into my Vista partition is that I spent $260 on the thing. I love OpenSuSE! But unlike zealots I don't have anything against Windows. Either would satisfy me. In fact, if I went into my Vista partition I'd likely wind up there for a long time and would be saying that the only reason I would go into my Linux partition is because I've spent so much time learning about it.

Has any one tried YOD'M for Vista? Its a 3D desktop cube for Vista. I played with it for a while, it wasn't that bad.

I just saw the youtube video of it here and i must say... as simple as that is, it seems quite effective, and it only seems like the 3d mods are only gonna get bigger from now on.

you watch in 6 months time, some sort of ubuntu patch for vista will get released

Er, Ubuntu? Never happen. Ubuntu is a Linux distribution. Gotcha! Heh, heh.

You mean Beryl, Compiz, OpenComposite, whatever they end up calling it. I don't think so, but a similar 3D desktop might happen.

Hey! What if Microsoft does it and gets sued by OpenComposite? Fun! Little company brings down the giant to its knees. Quick! Better patent that cube, guys. See, a cube is a mythological property and so only we can put a picture of a cube anywhere unless you pay us a zillion dollars or let us steal everything else you know, leaving you out of business because it now comes with Linux! Free as in free beer! If your users pay money to get it your gonna be in big trouble. Windows costs money, therefore you lose. Pay up!
