I do hope someone can help you soon. However, I've opted to wait until at least the release of SP1 for Vista before I'll put any money toward it. Driver support just isn't up to speed yet to my personal taste. In fact, I tried the RC1 and RC2 of Vista Ultimate last year and had to stop using my nice, legal-size flatbed UMAX scanner because there are no drivers for it under Vista. AND, to add insult to injury, a PR guy for UMAX told me that UMAX hadn't decided yet whether to make drivers for the device for Vista. He actually told me I'd likely have to keep using XP in order to use this scanner.

Have you priced legal-sized flatbed scanners lately?

First off, we ABSALUTELY NEED the exact product/model number, There are ALOT of variations of the Presario 2100 (apparently cause compaq's support site says search has exceeded which imo is fairly stupid)

Best place to start is here though

it's quite likely that your not going to get full driver support for that product .....ever...

You can go to ATI's website and download the vista mobility drivers, cross your fingers, and hope to gaud that at least the video chipset will be supported.

But you'll have to contact compaq (either over the phone or any other way) to find out SPECIFICALLY who manufactured the specific components you need to install yet. Then go to thier website and download the driver for it and then hope it'll work.

While you on the phone with compaq, ask if there will be any drivers for that machine, you'll most likely be told that there will never be support.

Unfortuneatly, most if not at least 90% of the laptops produced have zero support outside of the manufacturer of the laptops. They lay down the law on what the reference manufacturers are allowed to support or not. (for example, ATI is not allowed to list specific laptops as being supported in thier mobility set, which imo i find rather stupid)

Hopefully you didn't fully activate and lockdown that vista OEM disk on that machine, it's just not going to work.

Thing is, compaq/hp aren't specific on what TYPE of chipsets they use, they say ati mobility, but they don't tell you if it's 7000 series, or what, they don't tell you crap all, so you have to phone them to find out.

if it's a 7000 sereis or newer ATI chipset, you may be in luck by forcing a windows vista supplied driver.

no longer supported at all.

you best bet is to reinstall XP and use it, or purchase a newer laptop

Unfortunately, there isn't a driver out for it to make it work with Vista right now. I've got a 2100 as well and I can't get it to work. I can get the OS installed but without any video card drivers that are compatible with Vista, it only runs at 640 x 480 4 bit color. www.omegadrivers.net is working on making some ATI drivers that will support vista. HP will not be updating the driver to make it vista compatible. I read one topic of a guy that says that he got a vid card driver that worked on vista with his 2100 but he won't answer how or where he got it from.

Also, I found that you can try making Vista run in a different compatability mode listed here at this site

If you goto the Ati web site (www.ati.com) there are vista drivers available. It's a fair sized download tho, so check if your card is supported. If not run your driver setup in compatabilty mode for xp service pack 2 and run as administrator. This worked for my Ati Radeon Mobility 7500C, (I have a Sony Laptop and Sony are not planning to upgrade the drivers for my model to vista.. lol).
Okay I just tried it and it does install fine this time instead of the usual error message at the beginning of attempting to install. I'll let you know if it does work though. Nah It still doesn't work. It still comes up in 640 x 480 4 bit color. The driver will install but Vista can't use it.

HP's DV series of notebooks have full Vista support right out of the box. Older machines like that Compaq of yours, though, are likely to be problematic. The best thing I can tell you is to get EVERYTHING installed under XP so you can see the exact devices you have. Then go to the individual vendors' websites and try to find driver support.

Yeah I've tried that too but Radeon just directs us straight back to HP who says...screw you we want you to buy another laptop and never use this one again. Believe it or not, the only device that I can't get to function is the Video Driver. Everything else is fine. With this one driver Vista would function perfectly on this laptop.

That's ATI for you. Nvidia at least typically provides driver support for their mobile GPUs after they've been out a while, or you can force it to use an MX driver from that series and it will work and correctly identify it in the software (GeForce 4 Go uses a GeForce 4 MX400 driver, for example). Basically, Nvidia's driver support is there, even if it's sometimes hidden. ATI, on the other hand, redesigns their cards regularly and their driver quality is flaky. End result is that, if it's not listed, it won't work. This is why I refuse to get an ATI-based laptop. I know I'll never be able to get driver support down the road.

Yeah but this laptop only came with Radeon. All of my desktops have nVidia based cards and chipsets because they rock but just not that laptop. Ah well. I just hope someone will show me some love with a working Vista Driver.

Okay I've now gotten it work perfectly. This is how you do it.

First you do this step to get it to install the driver that you want to use whether that be the driver from your laptop manufacturer or anything else.

Afterwards, when you reboot your computer, go into your setup and change your video memory from whatever it is to 32MB. When you restart, everything should work perfectly.

Well, yeah.
In my case, I got Vista to work everything on my presario 2198 model except for the sound part. I wish someone had a way to emulate it or focus a certain driver to enable sound. If so, let me know.
Thx & xmas to all!
