Installing Vista on P5K hangs
I'm hoping some people can help me out. I've built a brand new machine:
Asus P5K Deluxe motherboard Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 4GB DDR2 1066Mhz RAM Nvidia EN8800GTS video card 2x 750MB Seagate Barracuda HD When I boot the machine with the Vista Ultimate DVD, I get the screen that the installation is starting with a progress bar, and then the installation hangs when the progress bar is about 20% of the way. I've tried different options in the Bios but none seem to help. If anyone has any tips - much appreciated. |

Hi there and welcome to DriverHeaven!
Just few quick questions here. Are you using RAID configuration on those SATA drives? And it just hangs, does the HDD's and DVD drive do anything ?? |

Thanks for the incredibly fast reply!
I've tried both using the built-in raid and not using any raid (setting the Sata interface in IDE mode in the BIOS). Both result in the same hang in the same place. When the installation hangs nothing seems to be happening, I can't even ctrl-alt-del, I have to press the reset button. |

It seems to freeze when its trying to recognize a device. Which device, I have no idea.
If possible, try another OS CD/DVD if you have one and see if the system boots correctly. |

try changing your DVD drive,
try using one memory module only, and if you have Windows XP installation CD, then you might want to try perform a flat installation of Windows Vista ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928902 ), create first partition on the disk drive, a 40 GB primary partition, then install the XP on to this partition, and then after the Windows is installed, the second partition will be created in the remaining space, copy file from the Vista DVD on to this partition, and perform the flat installation of Vista. make sure to choose "Clean Install" as the type of installation, not the Upgrade install, and also make sure to select the 40 GB primary partition as the location for the Vista installation. |

This board is a little shaky when using pata optical drives. Try to get a hold of an sata dvd drive and it wouldn't hurt to run through memtest just to make sure. Also try to update to the latest bios asap
Edit- You can get yourself an extra point on your HD WEI score by running the controller in AHCI mode. It might even help with your issue.. |

Just to add to this list, there are a couple things that you might want to consider:
1) I think Panging is on the right track. Some older drives, and some drives period, can cause the problem you are having. To add to what he mentioned, some drives, especially older ones, do not like running on the newer, 80 wire IDE cable, and require the older 40 wire IDE cable. Also, the opposite can be true if the drive is new. In the case of LG and Pioneer DVD drives they run better on the new 80 wire cable (in fact they usually ship the drive with them for that reason). Samsung drives, however, don't care. 2) you can update the bios without needing to use Windows, or an OS to do so. Just place the bios you want to update onto a floppy, and within the bios itself Asus has setup a menu option specifically for bios recovery. It could be that the problem you are experiencing has been fixed with a bios update. 3) Seagate drives tend to ship with the 1.5GB (SATA 1) limiting jumper installed. As I just implied, the jumper is there to force the drive to run the slower 1.5GB mode as to be more compatible with systems that don't support the SATAII, 3.0GB transfer speeds. As such you may want to remove the jumper completely in order to get the full speed of the drives since your board is capable of SATAII speeds (if the jumper is there it might be hindering things). However, if the jumpers are removed, you might consider putting them back on to force them to run in the slower, more compatible mode. On the same note, if the jumper is there, be sure it's on the right jumpers, because if they are on the opposite pins the drives will be running in debug mode.

Asus boards haven't been the best quality lately. They've gone from being the top brand to being really quirky. Right now, Gigabyte seems to get the best ratings, with MSI in a close second. Even ECS boards often get better ratings than Asus now. Basically, I'm telling you that you probably have a buggy board.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the excellent suggestions. More information: - I forgot to mention that as CD/DVD drive I have a brand new Samsung DVD-RW SH-S182M. I'm using the ide cable that came with my Asus p5k board. - I am running at the moment with one memory module. I've even switching between all 4 modules that I have (Kingston HyperX Dual Channel DDR2 1066MHz). So I dont think it's the ram. - I have tried switching to AHCI mode but same result. - My Seagates were running with the jumper off in 3mb/s mode. I've tried putting the jumper back in but same thing. - I'm running the latest BIOS - 0501 - I've tried installing XP. The setup boots ok from the CD, it copies files to the hd, reboots into graphic mode. From there the installation works for a while but about 3/4 of the way when it says "Installing devices" it hangs. The rotating messages still continue showing but I've left it overnight and the progress bar never moves further. I've rebooted, the installation picks up again but same thing. - The Windows Vista DVD I'm using is a retail copy, not a pirate copy. It's by now obvious that there has to be a problem with the motherboard as the symptom are always the same - problems when scanning devices. I've tried disabling as many on board devices from the BIOS - the 2 lan adapters, audio, firewire, wifi. Same result. I'm starting to think that there's something wrong with my motherboard. Any happy P5K users on this forum? |

If the Windows XP installation hangs too, I would say that 90% it's a problematic board.
Usually Asus boards are pretty good, my P5K3 is a good board, but nothing is perfect. You might have got yourself a dud. |

if you don't have another DVD drive then try to find another CD drive and replace the Samsung drive with it.
also, load BIOS default settings, use PS/2 keyboard, only one memory module installed, one disk drive, and if you can, then partition and format your disk drive first , a 40 GB (or so) primary partition, set the partition active (you can also use third party partitioning program for this). then try installing XP again, boot the computer direct with XP installation CD, when asked, select to format and install XP on the 40 GB partition. this only take just a bit of your time, and post back whether or not you can install XP this time. i edited the above many time, reread please. I tried with my BenQ drive (DVD LS DW1655) which I currently use on my existing Asus P4P800-based computer. I use a USB mouse (Logitech) because the P5K does not have a PS/2 mouse port, it only accepts a usb mouse. The mouse is detected as such by the BIOS. The BIOS is set to use all default settings. I have made a 40GB partition. The results:
- Vista: same hang when setup is booting from the DVD during the message "Windows is loading files" at the same location. - XP: I've tried it twice and both times it now hangs in the text-based setup (when the setup is copying the installation files to the hard disk). Here are 2 different screnshots I have received when it has hung: http://tinystocks.com/temp/IMG_3138.JPG http://tinystocks.com/temp/IMG_3139.JPG |

Have you tried MemTest? Try manually setting the memory timings and manually setting the appropriate memory voltage setting(setting the memory voltage manually is very important, try this first)

many things can cause that BSOD's, but i'd say 8 out of 10, system memory configuration or system BIOS causing it.
so do like dipstick advices. could be from reading your first post, i'm not sure, why i assumed you knew your the system memory specs, configuration, and already did the testing. otherwise, during the Windows installation, try using a more basic memory module, and use basic system memory configuration configured by the system, or tell us more about the memory modules, its name and specs. just reread your messages, you use Kingston HyperX, i think, unless it's faulty, this memory modules pretty much compatible with your system board. Thanks guys for all your help. I'm going to RMA my mobo. I think there has to be something wrong with it. I dont think it's the memory - a friend of mine has exactly the same configuration with the same brand components (cpu, graphics card, memory, etc) and he never had a single problem with all the default BIOS parameters.
Great forum, will definetly stick around, seems I can learn a lot from you guys. |

since your mind is (now) set to return the board, it would probably best to just do that, get a new one and then go from there.
come back and let us know how's it's going. |

Sorry i can't really help you on you're issue (have not seen the replies after this just yet). i have this board installed along with a E6850 (3.0 Gig) 1333mhz.
Windows vista home premium upgrade installed with almost no glitches.Exept for a activation problem. But yes so far i think this is a sweet board. Is thew a bios update for this board as i have not found one yet? |

MIG-31,
as seeing you mistyped your new Intel's processor name in the other thread in this forum, i just thought you might like to correct it, it's called "Intel Core 2 Duo" (not "Intel Duo 2", "Intel Core Duo 2")

The company I bought the board from said they tested it and it worked for them. I then sent in also the RAM that I was using (Kingston HyperX Dual Channel 2048MB PC8500 1066Mhz). I then got an email back saying that the board was defective and that since Asus was not producing it anymore I should choose a different board. Very strange. I've ordered the P5K Premium, hope that I'll have better luck than with the P5K Deluxe...
Thanks for all the replies. |

Re: Installing Vista on P5K hangs
Came upon this site while doing a repair on this board with WinXP Pro SP2. Had hang at same place... "Installing devices". Disabled the audio in the bios for the install.
Also noted spontaneous reboots after install until chipset driver from Asus website was installed. |
