Vista 64-bit...

Todays mail came and so did the DVD from Microsoft that has the 64-bit Vista Home Premium. And I was wondering that would it be smart move to install it now or just wait to xmas when I do upgrade on my rig? Any input is welcomed.

Besides I'm waiting till winter to upgrade as well. Allows for further driver maturity, and some thing nice to do during those winter nights. Besides I hate reloading an OS!

as i understand, in either ways, you will have to reactivate the Windows. so it's entirely up to you.
but, personally, why wait, i would just going to have to install it now, lol.

heh, yeah I'm glad that I'm NOT using OEM version so reactivation should go just fine

I'm using Vista 64 Home Premium with no issues except my onboard LAN that doesn't like it, a PCi add in card sorted that though. It all depends if you can be bothered, I'm in the middle of playing Bioshock so I ain't touching mine just now!

While I agree with you here for the most part (this is one of the saner forums with opinions about Vista), if anyone uses irreplacable software, it's worth verifying compatibility with 64-bit Vista before switching everything over.

Cisco's VPN client doesn't work in 64-bit Vista, which means I have to fire up vmware now to connect to my school's network...

Send it to me Teme and i'll test it for you. You know where I live hop on the ferry and fetch it over.

Don't worry about reactivation I reativated my OEM copy when I went AMD to Intel, took 2 minutes.
My buddy has reactivated his OEM version 4 times and not once have they asked why.

anyone considering a major change such as 32~>64, should always ALWAYS check each and every single program they use for capability problems and solutions....

Moved to 64-bit without any major problems. Only vdub64 won't work for some reason keeps crashing every time I open avi or mpeg file. I have Vista Codecs pack (64 bit) installed and lame64 installed.

Am soon going to install x64 Vista separately now that I have a motherboard for which there are drivers. The only thing I expect to bother me is the unsigned drivers limitation, and the lack of a tcpip.sys patch for half-open connections. I hope that it's not going to be too much of a problem so that I can finally get back into 64bit mode again. Using WinXP x64 was a real treat a while ago, but a few good things in Vista makes me more interested in going forward than back.

I find 64-bit codecs still have too many issues to use. I use the CCCP, and it works wonderfully.

tcpip patch can still be done if you feel like hitting F8 on every boot, or if you don't install a couple of Windows updates.

Yeah I've trouble shoot it to lame's ACM codec (64 bit). I don't have any other codec issues tho

Hey!

I just installed the 64 bit of Vista and installed the latest nVidia drivers.
Question: Shouldnt I be able to select my colour quality in the display settins to 64bit instead of 32bit?

Thanks!

A: No. Because the 64-bit means that it will work only 64-bit CPU's and it has nothing to do with display colors.

Ohhh, Thanks,

So what are some of the added benefits of the 64 bit version?

64-bit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

however, in real world terms, right now very little. The potential is there for some quite considerable improvements in the future especially with applications like Adobe Photoshop, rendering and video editing. There are some 64 bit applications like windows media encoder.

One huge benefit right now is the ability for the 64bit operating system to handle 4GB+ of memory. This alone makes it the OS of the future.
