Question about Vista....

This question is about setting up a RAID O using Vista. With XP you have to use a 3.5 disc to install 3rd party drivers and I know its not that way with Vista.Hows it done with Vista?...Much thanks!

At the beginning of the installation there is the same oportunity to install drivers, but now the files can be located on several types of media like CD, USB or even on a harddrive that can be accessed through standard drivers.

yep.. just hit the browse button.. and away you go...

Quite a number of RAID controller are supported out of the box..

in same cases, i've ran into issues where installing the official raid driver before installing vista resulted in issues... where as the fix is to install windows vista then install the raid drivers... (weird....)

I usually install from a USB Flash drive..... SO much better then the bloody F6.... now i don't have to install a damn floppy disk in any machine i plan on using raid on...

No hawgs..

You pop in the Vista cd/dvd, boot from it..

when you get to the installation location page..... you have the option to hit a "browse" button to locate and install any raid or other device drivers that MAY be needed to complete a vista installation... at which point instead of say in the case of windows xp, which always looked at the Floppy drive and nothing else, you have the option to stick a floppy/usb/another cd/whatever media that's available in, and browse to it and locate a driver to be loaded.

So the other RAID O driver will be on another cd/dvd rom?I hate to sound so stupid about all of this but installing RAIDS has never been my strong point.Forgive me.

Usually the vista dvd/cd only have common drivers.... Raid drivers... specially if newer controllers come out that obvious won't have a driver on the vista cd.....

Usually you can download or get a cd with the raid drivers on them. and before you can install windows vista... or xp.. or anything, for a RAID array being setup, they Windows setup WON'T be able to detect any hardrives installed (preventing you from installing windows at all).... so a driver NEEDS to be loaded before you can proceed.

like i had mentioned, in windows XP or older windows versions, if you had raid, you HAD to use a floppy disk to provide the drivers, with windows vista however, you can pull the windows vista CD out, pop in a cd with the drivers on it, OR use a USB Flash drive, or any other media that vista's setup can detect, to install the drivers from any other location. Allow vista setup to SEE the hardrive in any raid array, to allow you to continue installing windows.

Basically

Without driver, you can't install windows
With Driver, and the new options to install such a driver from any other location now, you can now continue to install windows.

PangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nicePangingJr is just really nice

btw, if you use Intel chipset based boards that supports the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (ICH8R/ICH9R) and you also use it,
you can download the software version 7.6.0.1011 on this page -- Download Search Results
quite a bit of issues in Vista have been resolved in this version.

there is also a newer version, 7.6.1.1002 WHQL, that is now available at station-drivers.com/
