freezing after a little while
I resently installed windows VISTA ultimate
all was running fine at first, but now the computer runs for a little while when i first turn it on, but then it freezes with out warning. I reset the computer and when it trys to load windows, all i get is a black screen. so i reset the compter AGAIN and then pops up the message "windows failed to start, this could be caused by a resent hardware or software change" & from here it will let me load in SAFE MODE, but if i try loading in NORMAL mode it gos back to a black sreen. any ideas? Now i had the computer apart recently, and i did TWO things, first i took the chip out to try another faster 2200 processor, i tryed two of these, and neither of them worked. secondly i also removed my network card and replaced it with a USB-2 complient pci card. What could be the problem? could i have simply lost too much thermal paste off the chip do u think? causing eventualy over heating my bios says the chip is running at : 46 deg C and the system temp is about: 35 deg C.

By changing some basic components a few times (CPU, Network card) I wonder if you've triggered the activation scheme and it's preventing you from getting into Windows? Are you getting any kind of prompt to re-activate when you get into Safemode?
Keep in mind that the NIC produces the MAC address and that's a vital statistic for ID'ing your system. My first thought would be to reinstall the NIC card you took out and see if you can get a good boot into Windows with that. When you go into BIOS, what kind of temperature do you see under the Hardware Monitor (or whatever it's called in your BIOS?) It might be a good idea to do a good cleaning and reapply some thermal compound/paste for the processor. I never try just re-using the same stuff. Good luck! |

I would download and install PC Wizard 2008. I realize you may have to do this in spurts as the system may freeze at various points. But, once you get this free program installed, you want to run it and then select the Temperatures utility. Go into the Options and make sure the Sensors are setup to update in Realtime. Then, with this program open and running, monitor the temperatures being generated on all the components:
CPU; GPU; HDDs, and anything else that will produce temperature readings from the sensors. Get the program from here: CPUID You may also try pulling out all but one stick of RAM at a time. Run MemTest86+ to test the RAM for any faults. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool While you're inside the case, take a few moments to clean out any dust that may have built up inside. Use canned compressed air to do this and make sure all the fans are cleaned and working properly. Good luck! |
