Since today's updates: New Update pops up over and over
So I ran through all of today's updates... 12 of them in total.
Now the same update pops up as a "new update" everytime I'm done installing it. It installs properly, and then windows update tells me I have a new update and it's the same damn one over and over. In my update history, the same update is there 4 times (installed 4 times??) It's this update: Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB937287) Download size: 18 KB You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. Update type: Important Install this update to enable future updates to install successfully on all editions of Windows Vista. This update may be required before selected future updates can be installed. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed. More information: A software update is available for the Windows Vista installation software feature Help and Support: Microsoft Help and Support |

Have you used vlite on the install of Windows?
I have an XP system which does the same thing, but with printer drivers, I never bothered figuring it out, as the printer works alright...

Is your copy of vista legitimate? Microsoft is notorious for putzing around with windows update and how it runs on pirated machines. Looking at your computer specs it seems like you've got the cha-ching for ultimate, so let's move on
![]() Perhaps the update is silently failing. Do you heavily customize your windows installation? Maybe a service you disabled or a feature you uninstalled improperly is causing windows update to serve you the update, but when it finall comes time to install it your computer is rejecting it. I know I've had issues like that back on XP when I would mess with my services. If you still can't get to the bottom of it, Update lets you hide updates...if you really think it's installed, it should be ok to hide the update. SP1 is looming and if this is a pre-req for SP1, I'm sure the SP1 installer will handle installing this.

Just to let you know, you aren't the only one having problems with that update. And, it's not just with x64bit versions either. Both 32bit and 64bit versions of that update seems to be messing up when coming off of Windows Update. Something to do with a size difference.. or some such (the one off of Windows Update is less than 20k, but the installer versions are 4.1mb and 9.6mb respectively). Why exactly it's happening is anybodies guess right now.
To fix this, download the update manually, and then install it. It will install correctly, and won't come up again. 32bit version HERE. 64bit version HERE. |

I am having the same problem too. I tried downloading the update manually from the link above, but that didn't work.

I know it's no consolation, but, I had no problem at all with any of the updates so far. 32-bit OEM Home Premium here.

Here's a quick thing to try: running with less ram, run/install the updates again to see if that helps.
As far as I can tell all of the people that have not been able to install this update have two things in common: they all have 4GB of ram installed, and are using 64bit Vista. I know that there is at least one update, update 929777, that has a high failure rate for installing unless you bring the total system memory (RAM plus video memory) down to 3GB, so it might be worth removing some of your RAM (such as 4GB down to 2GB), and giving the update a shot again. Also, after you download the file you might want to try disconnecting from the Internet (disable your network card, or unplug the ethernet cable), and disable your anti-virus, or any trojan/spyware/malware blocking software just in case it's blocking the install. |

I think it's fixed. Go to WU and press "check for updates" to refresh and then you should have a 9mb update. I successfully installed and haven't been asked after 2 boots so far.

turns out it was a very known issue
resolved it by downloading the patch manually (.msu file from M$) many many people were having the exact same issue with the exact same patch oh and it was a 64-bit patch only. |

The first is to delete the actual WU download folder, but you first need to stop the service before you can delete it. From a command prompt type "Net stop WuAuServ". Go into the Windows folder, and rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder (say SDOld). Then back to the command prompt, and type "Net start WuAuServ". The second one is the CatRoot2 folder within the Windows\system32 folder. Just rename it to something else (CatRoot2Old). Deleting the first folder should fix things though. I also find it best to reboot the PC, and then try using Windows Update again. Also, I find that if you use the Windows Update site be sure that Automatic Updates is set to "Notify" beforehand. I've seen Windows Update get all screwed up when Automatic Updates is set to do "automatic download/install", or set to the "download but let me choose to install" setting. |

yeah on all the machines i setup with windows xp... i set to notify before even downloading....
and i had gone through and wiped out all the windows update folders and files, but the sucker still refused to work at all.. it'd download, then windows update would just disappear...... (i find this to be much to common recently), go to turn of the computer, it starts installing updates and then says completed successfully, and shutdown only when i startup, it emediately thinks those same bloody updates are available again.
