New to Vista

Is there a way to permanently disable driver signing? I have found some cmd's to disable it for what appears to be a single bootup but I would like this to be permanent. I Googled and found lots of stuff but from what I saw it was mostly the ones I have been trying.

A forum member by the name of Rizen mentioned a program he uses called ReadyDriver. You can check out that thread HERE. If I remember correctly it creates a bootable USB/CD/DVD that will automatically hit F8, and turn off Driver Signing for you.

The problem is this: Microsoft is enforcing Driver Signing. Any bypass that people come out with (including the bcdedit -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS command) Microsoft patches just as fast via updates. In the case of the command I just mentioned, I remember that if you want to get it to work that you have to uninstall or not install these 3 updates: KB932596, KB938979, and KB941649. After that the above command will work, and it will disable Driver Signing. However, once those 3 updates get installed, or any one of those updates, it will start all over again.

BTW, KB932596 is a Kernel Protection update. This is the main update that will kill the above command. What sucks is that you have to unisntall KB941649, a very necessary patch for overall Vista stability.

Why do you want to disable them?

Originally Vista 64 bit was meant for professional environments, and microsoft (wrongly or rightly) felt that installing unsigned drivers could be detrimental to the stability and reliability of the operating system. Every company has to go through WHQL certification to get fully approved drivers.

Interestingly i use beta unsigned drivers from nvidia all the time and it never causes an issue, running 169.28 beta right now.....

Which specific drivers are causing you the heartache?

The 64-bit forced signing refers to drivers having a Publisher Identity Certificate (PIC), this is separate from WHQL certification.

Tipstaff: Looking through old MS papers, it looks like they had intended the BCDEDIT workaround to only be present in betas and RCs of Vista, with the only way around in RTM being to hit F8 on every boot.

Some programs that give me issues are

Core Temp- Using the Vista fix one where you run the batch file first, not too bad but sometimes i forget and it doesn't load right.

Riva Tuner was a problem for a bit. It installed and said it needed to disable driver signing. Fine it did it and rebooted. When you opened it again it said the same thing that it couldn't load the driver and wanted to reboot again. I got that figured out with a cmd line.

It just seems that some other the smaller independent software developers programs are the ones I am having issues with. I don't know if it costs money to have them signed or certified but if that is the case I feel you will see less of these kinds of appplications for Vista. I think I got it all figured out for the moment thou. Other than that I love Vista x64. It runs smooth and games seem to play flawless. It was quite an upgrade from my old system.
