Change OS, format HDD necessary?

When I change my OS, from XP to Vista, should I format all my hard drives?

I'm asking because I'm going from 2gb memory to 2x2gb memory, and for the computer to admit there is actually 4gb to utilize, I will have to change to a x64 OS. The choice would be XP or Vista, and I thought, when I'm switching OS already I could as well make the jump to Vista.

But for in order to go smoothly, is a format of all the hard drives necessary or will a format of the OS partition be alright as well?

If your OS is on a separate partition thats the only one you should need to format.

ok, then it is as I expected. thank god.
Would be a pain to need to format all other partitions as well. I thought there might be the possibility because of some registry entries and stuff like that. I'm glad that isn't the case.
Thanks guys!
