trying to re-install Vista x64: CDBOOT: Couldn't find bootmgr
I'm having troubles, as you can read in the title.
I installed some stripped down version of vista a friend had laying around but wasn't really blown away by the "coolness" and "quickness" he promised me. So now I want back to the normal Vista Home Premium x64, but when i put in the disk to install it, i get tons of unable to detect bootable device, put in a bootable disk and press the any key something like that, anyway, it doesn't detect my cd, and after ejecting and pushing it back in I get CDBOOT: COULDN'T FIND BOOTMGR and then it start automatically from the hdd with this vista that's installed. I think the problem might lie in the fact that before this happened I had XP installed. And when I installed that stripped down version of Vista, I formatted the C: partition I had for that Windows (XP) but I already thought to myself... my goodness, it does that very quickly! It could be that it didn't format the drive that instant, but during installation... I don't know.. I'm just at my wits end as far as this goes. I looked around on the internet for similar problems, but none of them gave a clear solution. I hope one of you can give me one. If you have any questions, just ask.

try and see if unplugging the hardrive.. and then forcing a boot from cdrom works...
to me however.. it sounds like the cd may be damaged and unable able to boot from it... or the optical drive reading it is fubar... for who knows what reasons though

well if the hardrive isn't even being loaded yet..... then there is no way anything else can be interferring with the boot process accept for a faulty boot from cd.
unless you've got usb drive plugged in or something else... Possibly bios has gone wonky for not sure what reasons... either way not sure what else to suggest....

This can be locked, deleted and thrown away. Not needed anymore.

Can you give us a run down of what drives are in your system? Such as what optical drives and what connector type they are, how many hard drives and their connector types you have, and in what format (RAID or Native).
The idea is to find out which device the bios is really trying to boot from, what drives are considered your main ones by the bios, and what hard drive (if we go by your system specs) not only Vista is on, but what one it dumped it's boot loader onto. |

I guess I'll explain it.
I'm a cheap bast*rd and a dumb one too. I didn't want to spend that much money on an OS like vista that would fully utilize 4gb. So I grabbed it from the space called internet. The thing was, I grabbed 2 versions. 1 of them was finished and the other was not, but I burned the unfinished one DVD. That's the reason why it wouldn't install and gave the error. Now I'm fully aware warez aren't allowed on the forum and don't want to start a thing about piracy and the ethics about it.

hey man i seen your post about the cdboot couldn't find bootmgr or whatever it is lol, but I guess you fixed that right? I have the same problem, I downloaded Windows Vista Basic from the usual places and I had it installed on my old XP OS, it was running fine, except I couldnt get it to update. Then I tried to fix the error I got from trying the Windows Update, and I kept getting this error. SO i looked online on how to fix this and there was some stuff I had to do to with the registry entrys or something, and then I ran this program called Windows Vista Activator and it was supposed to like read your PC as a fake one or something. The after I did all that I restarted the PC and still running fine, then I restarted it again and then it just kept booting up to a black screen, and when I would try to boot from the CD at first it said something about the checksum not being the same as the computed checksum. So I completely wiped my hard drive clean!.....And this is where I am at now and cant get "My" Vista CD to boot, I used PowerISO to convert the .daa file of Windows Vista to and .iso file, the I used MagicISO to burn the ISO to a dvd. Now my drive is wiped. And when I try to boot off of the CD it gives me this error CDBOOT: COULDN'T FIND BOOTMGR..Can you please tell me how you fixed this
P.S. I also did completely finish downloading the .daa of Windows Vista, and can you tell me where you got yours from or send me the link.....Thanks!!!! [COLOR=#000000]

UH, pardon me if I'm wrong, but are you SERIOUSLY asking us to tell you how to get a PIRATED version of Vista installed
![]() If so, good luck on that...ain't gonna happen here. You want to install Vista? BUY it! THEN, and ONLY then if you have problems get back with us.
