AM2 Cpu and the Dual core optamiser driver

just rebuilt the system after a particularly nasty crash while loading up John Woo's Stranglehold (dont ask)

anyway was updating the drivers and i recall using this particular one on the XP system with the FX60 chip ....

AMD Dual-Core Optimizer - The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized.

.... question is do i still need to install this on Vista ?

Thanks

Vista has the functionality built in so it doesn't need to have any separate utility installed.

the software's description is very promising, i probably don't know what to do with it, but to try it.
can possibly need to spend quite a time learning about it.

Windows XP required that peice of software to be installed or else alot of programs would crash horribly ... vista... already has everything sorted out.. and i think vista's implementation is much better anyways

I had no idea Vista already had this issue covered...

When I built my new PC, I installed Vista 64 on it and proceeded to install all drivers

I went to the AMD site and this little tool said XP/Vista so I installed it to.

I've never had Vista crash in any way... so I dunno if this is good to keep or not.

Does it use a lot of ressources?

No i don't think so..

if your having no issues... good.. don't "fix" it.. lol

But all the machines i've built, i've never needed the utility.... i've however tried installing it and encountered some oddities..

An example of which is with windows xp.... unreal tournament (classic)... would refuse to run properly with a dual core amd setup... installing the optimiser fixed it..

Windows vista, without the optimiser things work beautifully.. actually better and faster then xp.... installed the optimiser and was greeted with a pile of problems.

well I guess I won't try to "fix" something that isn't broken ... I'm already happy I can run Crysis very well ... I don't wanna get stuck under 30fps

Prince_Link is on a distinguished road

Re: AM2 Cpu and the Dual core optamiser driver

Contrary to popular, and uninformed belief, Vista DOES NOT, include the fixes for the TSC synching issue, and there are quite a few single core only games that will have performance issues without the optimiser.
