Here's what I would do, though, if I had any doubts:

1. Get a totally separate HDD and install Vista onto it with only this HDD connected.

2. Get everything setup and updated.

3. Make sure everything is working to your satisfaction.

4. If any problems arise, shutdown, connect your current XP HDD and boot to that. This way you've got a decent backup OS in case of trouble.

well, normally i would do that. but there are two reasons why i'm not going to do that.

1. i don't have a spare HDD i can use to pop in there

2. my current winXP install has some kind of nasty virus/trojan that i can't get rid of. and if i can't get that virus/trojan thing resolved, i'll just go ahead and format my machine anyways. so, this will give me the oportunity to play around with vista and i'll try out sp2 while i'm at it as well.

Your call, but if you do go that route I would take the advice from above.

i'll risk sp2. and if i end up not liking vista, i'll just revert back to winXP

Cool Dyre and what I am going to do is this. I have a new mobo here to try out and might pick up a new HD for it. I will install Vista Ultimate X64 > SP1 > SP2 without any additional updates or extras. I will be using the same Vista install disk I used on this system so if SP2 installs without issue I know theres something else conflicting on this installation ... make sense?

Installation of this SP2 Beta took about 18-20 minutes. I didn't use a stop watch on it.

I set it up to auto restart and it did restart about 3 times.

UPDATE: Since SP2 is designed to add better support for Bluetooth, Blu-Ray, and other recently developed devices, I figured I'd try out the Bluetooth options on my cellphone.

But, using the drivers installed by SP2 only, I just successfully transferred and image from my PC to my cellphone without any problem at all.

This one feature, alone, is worth having SP2 installed. I spent nearly a month trying to succeed at this prior to SP2 and nothing worked. This time, it was done in less than 5 minutes.

So, here's one thumbs up for the progress.

if my P3 733mhz with ati radeon 9500np and 1gb of ram with a 40gb hd and a SIS basied chipset motherboard is able to run windows vista sp1 32bit home premium as well as windows XP (with AERO enabled cause interestingly it runs smooth this way).... then your machine will run very well to.

Course i'd recommend dumping the machine and getting one 64bit capatible first.

I know the 2gb dual channel, intel northwood 2.4ghz with HT, ati radeon x1600, dual 40gb ide drives, and intel based 865g i beleive (Asus P4P800-VM) is able to run vista 32bit home premium not to mention a number of more recent games with as good as results as xp if not in some cases better... it's worth it imo.. specially for the relatively cheap price of the 32bit homeP of vista.

vista SP2 is installed and working ok , i can never understand though how other people see a difference in things as far as i can tell there is no change at all ... but thats probably just me

only upside is since install IE7 no longer crashes on me so thats a bonus

well, looks like i'm going to be formatting to vista tonight or tomorrow. my current winXP install has some kind of virus that i can't get rid of. it's been over 2yrs. since my last windows install on my machine. that's a BIG difference for me since i used to format my machine like every other week, lol.

anyways, i don't think my copy of vista has the sp1 update integrated into it. so, i am wondering is there any way to integrate sp1 into my copy of vista. will nLite do the trick? or am i to go through some kind of command process in CMD?

If you have some virus, is it even safe to do that? Unless of course you use another machine to do it.
