Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

Hi!

Got myself a shiny new laptop yesterday with 4 GB ram and so on. Though, to my despair I saw it had 32 bit Vista installed, something I don't clearly understand why.

My question is now if I can install a 64 bit version of the same Home Premium and still have a legal license? I want to do this as quickly as possible before I install to much software....

Re: Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

Your key should work for 32 and 64 bit. But i'm not entirely sure how it works if you have an OEM key as I've never tried that.

Re: Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

It should be fine as nicnik mentioned but I am not sure how the OEM key works either. I have an OEM key for XP Home on a Dell system I bought a few years back and had to email MS in order to use the key again it wouldn't pass WGA ...

Re: Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

chances are the cd wont work if it is OEM unless the 64bit key is legit, you may also have to call M$ to get activation even if it is legit if it was installed elsewhere

Hmm, I should have checked this before I bought it. I'm gonna contact Fujitsu-Siemens to begin with and see what they say.

Re: Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

calling M$ is a very brief process takes maybe 5 min just make sure to advise then the software is only installed on current rig

Re: Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

you cannot use a retail DVD to install using a OEM KEY.. you need an OEM DVD.

The best way to go is to grab the 64bit OEM Eddition install it useing the key that is likely on the bottom of your laptop to install.. and then either return it to whomever you got it from.... or however you can go about doing it.

Doesn't matter if you have 32bit or 64bit key, they both will work going either direction

IF you can't find someone that would be willing to loan the disc.... you HAVE to call microsoft and ask for the 64bit OEM eddition disk from them.... it's like 19 bucks or something...

If it's that cheap I could do that. But, I'm gonna ask Fujitsu-Siemens if they can send me the recovery discs with 64-bit Vista instead..

Re: Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

they likely won't.... i've yet to come across a single computer manufacturer that actually installs or has anything 64bit available, they've all used 32bit and if you install 64bit.. your support on the product drops considerably (stupid isn't it?) I've even had dell give me shit for install 64bit on one of thier machines....

i've yet to see a single manufacturer that provides a machine with over 4gb for the desktop market.

everything is still hovering between 1gb and 4gb

Re: Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

How does vista 32 handle 4 GB? Is it like with XP 32 or can Vista 32 make full use of all 4 GB?

Re: Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

With the use of a "fix" that's built into it.. it "can" address the full 4gb.... but your much better off with 64bit...

Re: Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

I'm just wondering since they delivered the laptop with 32 bit and 4 GB. I'm gonna go 64 bit but I was merely curious. If it had been the same as with XP I would have wondered why they even bothered putting 4 gigs init..

Re: Moving from 32 to 64 bit.

another quick google search..

How to Enable More Than 3.5 GB of Memory in 32-Bit Windows Vista | Vista Rewired

it's PAE which essentially allows vista 32bit to address the additional space at quite often... the cost of performance. (i find it more counter productive then anything)

Sometimes it works for some people and sometimes it doesn't for others.. mixed reports.. i've gotten it to work everytime so long as the hardware itself is capable of it. generally any 64bit hardware system will work out of the box with it... but i haven't bothered with any system that is strickly 32bit.
