Re: Dual Boot Question
It didn't work in my mum's system either. She has a newer DVD drive than mine. Mine is an old Lite-On DVD RAM drive with lightscribe. I only used it because it is black like my case, but it should have worked in my mum's computer.

Re: Dual Boot Question
Yes it should have very odd ... still sounds like the disk isn't being burned as bootable.

Re: Dual Boot Question
I'll have another go at burning them using Alcohol 120%.

Re: Dual Boot Question
It didn't work and I know Alcohol works because I've used it to burn bootable Windows CDs before.

Re: Dual Boot Question
It has to be both systems burners. Maybe the new Linux's support new bootable parameters.

Re: Dual Boot Question
I burned it on a 3 year old Samsung DVD burner without issues that's weird. Is the disk spinning up?
I am working on an old system for my Aunt this weekend and it has a 52X CD ROM drive ... it wouldn't spin up fast enough to read the copy of 98 SE I was trying to install on it. I had to swap out one of my DVD drives to make it work.

Re: Dual Boot Question
It doesn't spin up. It does a small read then the screen just stays the same and I have to restart.

Re: Dual Boot Question
Sounds like what I had happening here with the CD ROM on my Aunt's machine I thought at first the disk was bad I haven't used it in years. But as soon as I changed to the DVD drive it span up and loaded np you might have to try another CD drive.

Re: Dual Boot Question
Try to limit the burning speed. I've experienced similar problems when burning with auto speed but setting a lower limit fixes the issue. Seems some discs doesn't quite hold what they promise.

Re: Dual Boot Question
That's a good idea too man and it will also allow more compatibility between drives.

Re: Dual Boot Question
Thanks. I haven't looked around at any Linux distros yet. Before I get started, I have used Ubuntu before and I found it difficult to try and load programs. I just didn't know what to do. I felt overwhelmed by the whole programming side of it all. Is it still the same now? Do you have to command for things to work or has it become more User friendly at all?

Re: Dual Boot Question
Linux in general, and Ubuntu in particular, are just as easy to use as windows nowadays. In my opinion it's even easier in most cases. Wine is starting to shape up very nicely as well so most windows apps work pretty well or with just minor glitches. Everything is graphically oriented now and it's only on very rare occasions you need to bring a shell up for the most part.
As it is now you don't need any programming skill to use Ubuntu, you don't need any real knowledge about *nix at all really, unless you want to do those extra things that most people won't ever do. There can be some issues with drivers for newer hardware but in general there are workarounds and the ubuntu-forums are often very helpful if problems should arise. I can say that I haven't experienced any more problems with Ubuntu than i have with Windows. Finally we even have drivers for the X-Fi soundcards, that's been the biggest issue for me before, that's not so anymore! Of course the layout is a bit different if you're used to windows so it might be a bit difficult to find things at first but you'll get used to that quickly enough. And running the cube desktop is really purdy!

I've got BIG problems guys. I tried installing Ubuntu. I ran into problems with partitioning manually so I ran it using the auto function on the start screen. Went well. Ubuntu loaded up and I was happy with the way it looked, feeled and worked. I ran an update check and got everything up to date. Rebooted no problem. I then decided to enable the graphics driver after having installed Wine so I could start playing. Upon reboot it wouldn't load up. It said that it couldn't load the cman program at boot. So I rebooted. Nothing. I then decided to try and go into Vista again to check things out. Vista wouldn't load. I ended up reinstalling Vista, jumping on the Linux CD and then tried to figure out if Ishould tear apart my Mum's computer to enable SLI on my system or just settle for an XP-Vista Boot?

Re: Dual Boot Question
Hmm.. is it nvidia or ati? I've experienced a broken gfx driver once and ended up re-installing ubuntu once, that was faster than fixing the problem. If I recall it was X config file that didn't get properly updated and the result was that X just didnt work at all. Installed the driver manually after that and everything was just dandy.
Why Vista won't boot I have no idea, that shouldn't happen at all unless it's on a second harddrive and the mapping is incorrect, this is easily fixed in the config file of grub. I would suggest that you ask for help on the ubuntu forum when it comes to the graphics driver. It's more likely that you'll get quick help there. |

Re: Dual Boot Question
Very odd I didn't have issues with 32 or 64 bit drivers for the NV or ATI card I have here. All I can suggest is what Liqourice suggested and re-install Ubuntu.
On SLI I think that would just complicate the issue Bro .. keep us posted.
