Need a bit of help with a Vista harddrive...

Ok so I'm helping a friend get their files off a their harddrive right? No biggie.
Cept that the drive will not boot, it gives the following error message:
File BOOTMGR not found.
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL
(That's kinda why we need to get the files off of it.)
Woop-de-do Micro$haft, Vista has sickened me yet again, glad I use XP, lol.
This is Home Basic btw...all we want to do is get the files off of it, so I put it
in my PC to copy/paste all the photos/music/ect... to my harddrive until I've
got XP Pro SP3 installed, sounds easy enough, well it ain't Vista seems to
have some kinda hard drive protection so all I see is two empty folders...help.
Please reply quickly as they need their PC as soon as possible. Thanks

Sounds like the drive has other issues besides Vista. You might want to try a disk recovery program on it.

EDIT: I am not aware of any disk protection programs in Vista I have swapped drives formatted with Vista Ultimate X64 in machines running XP SP3 and last night Windows 98 SE.

Re: Need a bit of help with a Vista harddrive...

I've done similare things.... with vista on the drive and slapped the drive in a xp machine and pulled the files off no problemo.

It sounds like the Drive is screwed... and ISN'T related to vista being a problem.

Disk Recovery... sounds like there is indeed more problems then what was beleived.

BOOTMGR error ... put it in another machine and run a BOOTFIX
there are some applications that do it very well (Partition Table Doctor for example)
