Help with Vista program uninstall issue

I have a friend's computer on my table today and there are some issues that I can't figure out. She tried to uninstall AVG anti-virus from her computer and got all kinds of problems with that. So she went to AVG's site and got a removal tool in order to uninstall AVG. That all went well but now the big problem. She is now unable to uninstall other programs. During the uninstall process the computer either freezes up or throws an error message about the uninstaller tool for windows is missing and/or there is a ghost uninstaller tool installed. HUH!?!?!

If anyone can help me out with this I'd appreciate it.

Re: Help with Vista program uninstall issue

That is really odd I don't use AVG so not completely sure. Have you removed all traces of AVG using the Vista uninstall program in the control panel?

Might have to run a registry cleaner perhaps something is corrupt ... all I can think of.

Re: Help with Vista program uninstall issue

Well there is no trace of AVG anywhere via the removal tool that she downloaded from AVG in order to fix a problem she was having when trying to uninstall it. Ever since then its been down hill.... At this point I've already tried a system restore and various other things and I am waiting to hear back from Gateway on maybe sending me a recovery disk since they were so gracious enough to exclude it from the bundle when she bought this thing. In any case the only thing that seems left to do is backup some files and reinstall windows. i haven't seen this problem before and neither have anyone that in know personally and a Google search came up null so WTF. lol

Re: Help with Vista program uninstall issue

Something may still be in the registry that's how Norton's copy protection works(or used to). I did a quick google myself check the last post in this thread it is recent and might help.

(I am not familiar with this site)

Re: Help with Vista program uninstall issue

Have you tried booting in safe mode? Then see if it is still available to uninstall there?

What program did you receive from Avira? Can you send me a link?

One thing you could try is to re install AVG, reboot, then uninstall.
Are you sure she originaly uninstalled it properly?
What kind of problems did she encounter exactly while uinstalling it?

Re: Help with Vista program uninstall issue

Tried booting in safe mode throws the same error message at me. "Windows uninstall tool is missing" in a nut shell thats the message. Just a removal tool I am unsure what they gave her as I didn't look at it but I can check. Supposedly there have been major problems uninstalling AVG from certain Vista computers and Avira has provided a 'removal tool' that correctly uninstalls AVG. The problem before she downloaded Avira's removal tool was that she was unable to uninstall AVG at all. She would click on the 'uninstall AVG' icon and the process would start and then her computer would lock up. She also tried going in through control panel and tried uninstalling it that way to the same result. (which is expected)

I agree there that I might try installing AVG again rebooting and then uninstalling it on the backside.
