Language options for Vista?

My question with Vista is if there are any language options for the OS when doing the initial install? I've only done one Vista install ever (my computer) and I don't recall there being such an option for this.

Or is this an option that's only given to you if you have an international version of the OS disk? Does the language option only appear when you initially install the OS, or can you install the OS in your prefered language (English) and then later though some option somewhere in Control Panel then change the language option from your initial English language to another desired/language?

Re: Language options for Vista?

As far as I know the additional languages are available as add on packs from the MS site Bro after installation.

Re: Language options for Vista?

The add on language packs only work if you have Vista Ultimate or Enterprise.

How do I get additional language files?

Re: Language options for Vista?

Apart from the Multiligual Interface Pack for Ultimate and Enterprise, MS also do a Language Interface Pack which is for all versions of Vista.

Quote:
Windows Vista Language Interface Pack (LIP).* Windows Vista LIPs provide a translated version of the most widely used areas of the user interface. LIPs are freely available to download, and most LIPs can be installed and used on any edition of Windows Vista. Because not all of the user interface is translated, LIPs require at least one parent language. The parts of the user interface that are not translated into the LIP language are displayed in the parent language. When you download a LIP, you get the parent language requirements for that language. The parent language pack needs to be installed before the LIP can be installed. For more information, including a list of languages available for downloading, go to the Microsoft Local Language website.

Re: Language options for Vista?

I think I remember the Vista install asking me up front something about languages and keyboard.

right, i read that part as well. however, if you follow the link in the part that you quoted, it'll take you further into Microsoft's website asking you what languages you wish to choose from and whatnot, but when it comes down to the OS choice, you only get winXP Tablet PC Edition for an OS choice. so, that turns out another dead end as well.

Re: Language options for Vista?

Yeah...I took that link too right after I posted and it doesn't make sense. It clearly says in the bit I quoted that it is for all versions of Vista but then only lists XP via the linky. Maybe they do work also for Vista but just haven't been updated on the webpage???

Re: Language options for Vista?

Just found this:

Windows® Vista™ Language Interface Pack - Reference information for LIP languages supported by Windows Vista English

Not very many useful languages though (no offence meant to anyone from the countries concerned).

Albanian, Assamese, Bengali (India), Bosnian - Cyrillic, Bosnian - Latin, Gujarati, Hindi, Icelandic, Indonesian, Kazakh, Macedonian, Malay, Marathi, Oriya, Serbian - Cyrillic, Tamil, Uzbek - Latin, Vietnamese and Welsh.

Re: Language options for Vista?

Maybe the only solution is to buy another Spanish version of Vista or just upgrade the English version to Ultimate...

Probably the reason Spanish or any other major language is not included in the LIPs is their popularity and MS know they can make a few bucks from forcing an upgrade to higher versions of Vista.

Also, I don't whether you would be able to consider an English Vista install (with your current version) and then buying an MS Office language pack at $24.95. Would that be any good?

every version from Retail to OEM from 32 to 64bit from Starter to Ultimate... the First thing that comes up EMEDIATELY after booting from the CD is the selection of your location, your language... .and your keyboard layout language...

Windows 7 is exactly the same way

after you make your 3 selection, it presents you with a big "install" option at which point you punch in your cd key, and then select your install location/partition/hd's.
