Re: new mb/cpu install
I wouldn't be surprised if there still are some unsolvable situations, especially if the installation is old and/or the motherboards differ a lot. But in general it should work. It might take a while and possibly a few reboots before everything is identified, but the process has eventually completed well here. Last time I did it I was also happy to see that the Windows 7 installation on the same system went through the process much faster than the side-by-side Vista. Seemingly by being able to identify and install several items at the same time.

Re: new mb/cpu install
I would expect problems unless it was the same hardware just replaced. If it was Intel before and AMD after you will have issues or vise versa

Re: new mb/cpu install
I guess ther's no reason not to try it. If it works OK, then you saved yourself some time.
If not, what the heck, you do a clean install, which is what most people would recommend any way. You don't have anythg to lose, and time saved to win

Re: new mb/cpu install
Either it will work or reformat nothing to lose just backup first

Re: new mb/cpu install
buzzard
ah actually there is quire a few not rec the clean insta anymore- read post 2 & 3 for example. which was the reason for the post... i normally do a clean install when switching, but seeing as how i just did that on both comps a cpl of months ago, wanted to see if i could sidestep the hassle( along with what some peeps have been posting aboiut not doing it with vista & 7). the main(& to me obvious point) of this thread is if it was worth trying to install the new hardware without the clean install or if the probable/possible hassle of not doing it was worth the time/hassle. from the first 2 posts im going to try it-assuming the deal im trying to work even happens. guess it answers mac to. anyway thx again for response

Re: new mb/cpu install
in my experiences in actually trying this and from what others have told me (primarily from my previous place of work, lol), i would highly recommend that you uninstall all drivers associated with this motherboard first before you attempt the swap. that will give you the highest possibility of a clean swap w/o needing to reformat.
i would even go as far as using drivercleaner or driversweeper for this just to ensure that even the registry is clean of driver related files. another way that this is least likely to cause you to reformat, would be to switch motherboards of the same chipset. like, if you're going from a biostar p45 MoBo to a gigabyte p45 chipset MoBo for example. |

Re: new mb/cpu install
yes, the driver thing was a given, tho thx for reminding me as i tend to forget stuff & i had not really thought about actually doing it. lol.
as above, if this happens will be going from x38 to x58.

Re: new mb/cpu install
^^ what he said. because you never know that if what i said in my previous post will actually work. it just increases your chances of not requiring a reformat.
