In the last few days I've found I can neither update Windows or Defender in my copy of Vista. When I try to update either of them I get the following error;

Error found: Code 0x80070422


Things I've tried is running a thorough scan with the anti-virus software (Avast Home 4.8) I have both in windows and Safe Mode. I've also tried a couple of spyware utilities that I have and they haven't helped either. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That did the trick, mkk. Windows Update is back up and running as well as Windows Defender. Appreciate your help.

To add to what mkk posted, it's worth noting that some viruses, malware, and such can either delete or turn off services, such as Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Computer Browser, Windows Update, Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing, and a few others, even the ones for Plug and Play, and USB support. So, even after you try the suggestion on the site mkk listed be sure to continue scanning your system for viruses and such, cuz what caused it to turn off could still be in your system.

Here's a list of programs to give a try:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
SUPERAnitSpyware
Spybot Search & Destroy
AdAware Anniversary Edition

Be aware: don't use the resident programs of Spybot (TeaTimer) or Adaware (AdWatch) while both are installed. They don't like each other.

Run each of these programs in both regular and safe mode, and be sure to give your anti-virus a run after you've run the above programs.

Thanks for the tips, Tipstaff. I already have Spybot and the anniversary version of Ad-Aware installed on my computer. Appreciate it.
