??? Don't Have A Clue

OK, I spent yesterday putting a fresh copy of Vista Ultimate (32-bit) back on my son's computer. Installation and subsequent updates went just fine. However, I ran into a problem. I took his old IDE dvd burner out and put in a Sata dvd burner plus a blue-ray player. My son likes to rip the music off his cds and keep them on the computer so he doesn't have to use the cds so much. Neither Win Media Player or the iTunes program he favors will copy the music for him. The motherboard is a EVGA 680i with an Intel 6600 processor. I've tried all I can think of, can anyone suggest anything to get things working?

If I have missed giving any info needed, please let me know.

Re: Don't Have A Clue

does the computer "see" the dvd burner and player?
if not, there might be a problem with cableing. Otherwise, try to update the drivers?

Yes, they both show up when you look in "My Computer."

Do their programs recognize the new burner?

Re: Don't Have A Clue

Once, I had similar situation, DVD drive under Vista was not recognized as it should be.
Problem was every time when I was trying to burn data disc (only data disc) using burning softwares. I was able to burn data disc using only Vista's (very bad) burning service (drag and drop files on drive in My computer). I tried many suggestions and softwares but that didnt help me, at the end I sold the DVD drive.

My thought is, major Vista's problem is impossibility to disable burning service that Vista provides.(XP was very clear about that= disable or enable).

My suggestion about your problem is, try this software CDex 1.51 version (use google).

Regards

Re: Don't Have A Clue

i'm finding more and more audio cds that have heavy CD Protection and i've had customers come in asking/figuring there computer was not working properly..

If you've tried known working older disks.. then we know that can't be the case...

It should be as easy as going to the windows media player RIP tab.. selecting the songs and hitting RIP..

But one thing that sometimes occurs that i've seen.... is for whatever reason.. SOME motherboards appear to have a problem with SATA optical Drives.. i know the orginal sata controllers wouldn't even work at all... but every once in awhile i run into a more modern board that does weird and strange things.

I'd stick the IDE drive back in just to see if something changes...

Otherwise probably take a peak at your ripping options.. make sure copy protection isn't enabled as well.

Re: Don't Have A Clue

I've always used a program called Exact Audio Copy......works great and haven't had an issue yet. It says it doesn't look for any copy protection, only the audio tracks, so therefore it always rips the audio regardless. Well, I don't know about that, but it hasn't failed to rip a music CD yet for me. And I've ripped quite a few with EAC.

Maybe you should look into that program and see it that works for you.

Re: Don't Have A Clue

What is annoying is that both Windows Media Player and iTunes have the same problem. The cds that my son is trying to rip are all older ones that he has ripped before.

Good idea about using the IDE burner and see if the same thing happens, I shall give that a try.
