Does IE7 Banish Google and Yahoo Search? Vista Testers Lose Toolbars

Along with the limited beta release of Microsoft’s new Windows Vista came a beta version of IE7 (Internet Explorer 7).

Almost immediately, Vista and IE7 users began reporting that their Yahoo! and Google toolbars had..vanished, while other less, um, competitive toolbars (pop-up blockers and form-fillers, to name two) experienced no such mystical disappearance.

But hey, that’s why they call it “beta", points out Molly Holzschlag.

Perhaps more directly, Microsoft’s technology evangelist and “Chief Blogger", writes on his Scobleizer blog that “There’s a report, on the Register, that IE 7 doesn’t work with the Google or Yahoo toolbars. I just talked with Dean Hachamovitch, the guy who runs the IE team, and he says that they tested with the Google and Yahoo toolbar and it was running on their machines (he just sent me screen captures of his personal machine running IE 7 with both the Google and Yahoo toolbar installed) and they in no way are trying to block the Google toolbar from working. He says that he commits to everyone to getting the toolbar to work and if there’s something that isn’t working the IE team wants to know about it so they can fix it.”

So, the bottom line, Microsoft seems to be saying is, if your toolbars disappear, it’s just coincidence, and they are working on it.

In the meantime, it has also been pointed out that you can use the preferences settings in IE7 to make either Google or Yahoo! your default search engine (IE7’s default search engine is MSN, but you can hardly blame a company for pushing their own stuff).

Nah, of course they aren't. It's more a warning to not use IE7 yet than anything else ...

I dunno I had this on my PC for all of a few hours. I thought that it truely sucked. First off I had to uninstall/reinstall my firewall (zonealarm) after installing IE7 because it wouldnt start up. In IE7 itself certain pages (like this one) took forever to load. I was trying to make a simple post on the forum that would normally take maybe 5 mins. Well after messing around for over 10 mins I thought maybe my connect was messed up so I reconnected. It took me over 15 more minutes to make a post. Also yahoo mail wasnt too compatible w/ it. It worked, but it looked all funky and it told me i needed to upgrade my browser and such. Also unless you put your favorites in like a side pane I could not see them all. When you click on the favorites menu at the top it opens your favorites full screen. However mine would not all fit on one screen and I didnt see anyway to scroll down or over to see the rest. If you made a favorites toolbar icon it would open up in a side frame and they worked fine from there. I know its only a beta, and not really a public beta, but it sure has a long way to go in my opinion to be something I would use everyday. Another weird thing is the refresh/stop button was the same which I did not like at all. I was never sure which one it was going to do. Anyways thats a little off topic, but if anyone is considering trying to get your hands on it, I really dont think its worth it.

Microsoft has already been caught doing this sort of stuff before (Excel "logging" people's activities) and such so I don't think they would do it again. I also remember Bell Canada blocking the website to a local Union that was on strike against them at the time and got allot of grief about it.

umm I installed the IE7 beta a while back, and all I had to do to get the google toolbar back was click on view and check the google bar under toolbars. Trying to find a good position for it in the new layout is a completely different story though.

The only thing wrong with the IE7 beta was that I couldn't do my online banking with it (non-supported browser) so off it went.
