Slightly off topic but how is this a blessing? Hardware encryption just means that our fair-use rights will be eroded even further, the RIAA are now claiming that fair use doesn't include copying albums you have bought to your mp3 player, if they can use hardware to enforce that - politics again - then there will be little or nothing we can do about it.

If I'd wanted a system I could do nothing with except play games I would have bought a console!

And don't forget, all you VOTERS, that all this is legislative. Every last drop of it.

Let your reps know that this is bullshit!

How much do you want to bet that any HD movie will be pirated no matter what kind of stupid copy protection is on it.. Some hacker will will just grab it off the line after the hardware protection.. or build hardware to counteract/decode it, and then instantly put the movie up on the net at full resolution so all the people can watch it without the copy protection monitor/video card/OS.. It is all such BS and such a waste of time.

Yeah but this kind of a pain in the ass. Some one needs to make some kind of kill switch for this very purpose.

Hmm just thought of some thing. Do you folks remember the decoding cards for DVD? How about the same thing for HDCP?

Also you dont need HDCP video card to use vista, you just will not be viewing any HD-DVD and blu ray dvd movies on your video card. Sappire is suppose to be putting out a HDCP supported video card soon, but its a X1600XT.

Before you shit yourself. Please read.

Well, I've read over this entire thread and here are my thoughts.

being an MS beta tester, I've been on top of the whole Vista issue since '04 *when it was called longhorn* (which is still a better name than Vista *puke*)

GAMING:
As stated before, MS is pushing to have the Archane and Outdated DirectX 8.1 Halo2 game to be converted to DirectX 10 to try to "PUT THE GAME BACK IN WINDOWS". The thing is, the game has always been in windows. Talk to the 4 million WoW users, the 1 Million Steam (Counter Strike , HL:2, DoD ) players, just ask the hundreds of thousands of Unreal Tournament series players out there. The fact is, Consoles have 30+ Million users, and PC only has close to 9 or 10 million... In Microsofts eyes, due to their great inability to think like consumers, they see that as "declining" and "threatened".
Over a year ago, when the news about the X360 started hitting news sites, MS reps all stated that Console gaming is the way to go and that PC gaming is dead. Shortly after this,
Rumors about Linux becoming the PC Gaming OS, (which All versions of Unreal Tournament and Quake have always worked on, despite public knowledge) and Mac OS X becoming a PC Gaming platform popped up. And stupid MS realizing what they had said , suddenly decided to take their most popular game, and slap it on Windows Vista, buff up the graphics some and add some customization tools, etc. And claim that Windows Vista is *da bomb*

Further note on Gaming: DirectX 10 uses a whole new revision of Shader models, something called unified shaders, which is absolutely incompatible with Current video cards, right now the Vista Beta uses 9.0c so that people can preview it, but at release, Vista will require DirectX 10 video cards for the shitty ass looking, gay MacOS rip-off GFX hog desktop.

I am sure that Gaylo 2 : PC will require DirectX 10.

On a further note. The Unreal Engine 3.0 and the DOOM 4 Engine are both Direct X 9.0c, Shader Model 3. these new engines are coming out this summer / fall. Huxley will be the first title to ship using Unreal Engine 3.0 technology. These two engines are going to power another 3 years of Gaming.... ALL Direct X 9.0c baby. The Monolith engine??? Used in F.E.A.R? DX 9.0c

SO DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BUYING A KICK ASS 9.0c CARD LIKE AN X1900XTX... I'VE KNOWN ALL THIS INFO ALL ALONG AND BOUGHT ME ONE THREE WEEKS AGO. THX.

VIDEOS:

1980x1080i..... is a 16:9 resolution. Right now, the best you can get on the market that is mainstream is a 24" 1900x1440 4:3... these cost a nice spiffy > $1000.

So, if your dropping that kinda of cash anyhow... then go ahead... upgrade everything with vista comes out.

My Recommendations:

FOR GAMERS:
Stick with XP... its got another 3 years of life in it, with all the hottest and latest games / game engines. Remember.. the X1900XTX GPU is MORE POWERFUL than what the X360 has..

FOR VIDEO/MOVIE ADDICTS:
Not happy with the conventional DVDs that play NOW on XP and VISTA at 480? So you absolutely need that super high-def 720, 1080 i or p? Then if you gotta have it, then upgrade... so get the latest DirectX 10 video card in Decemeber along with a new 24-36" HDCMP LCD or Plasma monitor! Just like you got the Mustang and that 60" HDTV in your living room? Nothing wrong with that... Just change, which by now we should all be used to.

If you absolutley need to be on the Cutting Edge of DVDs and Movies (NOT GAMES!!! I repeat.. NOT GAMES!! Just MOVIES!) then get vista, get a blue ray or hd-dvd player and get taht X2100XTX and 8900GTX (lol) and have fun.

I wouldn't get too upset over this. As the post above states, XP and 9.0c still have a few years of life left in it. It'd probably be cheaper to get a new TV and a BLU-RAY/HD-DVD player than it would be to upgrade your computer and monitor, after the initial release price fall of course.

At any rate, there is no need to fear as it is in a gaming company's interest to make their games as compatible as possible which will correlate to 9.0c and XP support for a while.
