You might want to check in your power settings in your bios. There should be different options for what your power button does.

Has the SLI rig been doing this ever since it was built, or did it just start? Shutdown problems are usually caused by a faulty driver or piece of hardware, so did anything get updated about the time the problem started? Is startup normal? Are any problem devices shopwing up in DevMan?

It may be possible to pinpoint which app or process is 'hanging'. Right click on the My Computer icon and then select Manage. (Or if you don't have the My Computer icon on your Desktop, go to Control Panel and open Administrative Tools.)

Expand the listing under Event Viewer by clicking on the + symbol.

Click on the System object to open a long list of processes. Scroll down that list for any RED Error or YELLOW Warning indicators in front of a process.

Take special note of anything that has either of these symbols at the time you attempted your Shutdown of the system.

You can also check for these Errors and Warnings in the other items under Event Viewer, especially Application.

Good luck!

You know what...does your PSU have dual 12V lines? There was an article over at "The Inquire" which talked about issues /w dual 12V PSU & SLI/Crossfire. The timing circuit in the MB may just be going as well.

If it is the motherboard it'll give you a good reason to go the dual x16 SLI setup.

when the computer went into sleep mode which i presume it was a stand by mode, what happens if you hit a key or move your mouse, did it come out from the mode to the normal operating mode? or it would not, and you can only do either turn off the computer with the power button or reboot it by using the reset button?

anyway, try starting the computer and boot into the XP's Safe Mode, and see if you can shutdown the computer properly?

The ONLY way the rig will work{or is able to shutdown} is with the power button or the restart button. When I click"restart" or "turn off" in Windows, the monitor will shut down. But the computer itself will not cut off.

ok, but have you tried shutting down after booting into the Safe Mode yet?
if you've already tried that, i'm almost certain that this has to do with your system BIOS.

to boot into the Safe Mode hold down the F8 key during start ups,
then select the boot option, and then wait till the Desktop already finished loading, then Shutdown the computer.
