help!! windows cannot pick up the 250g Sata
i just got a seagate 250Gb Sata and i have installed it into the computer.
The problem i have it that i press del at startup to bring up the bios and it didnt pick it up i then did auto detect and that didnt work either. i changed the sata to enable in one of the sub menus in bios and it still didnt work. Is there any drivers that i have to install for the motherboard in order to know that theres a sata hard drive there? this sata is my slave it will b for backup only! |

...Motherboard.... Driver specifics..
if you have an Nvidia NForce chipset on that board and that drive is a SATA2 drive.... your quite likely out of luck.... unfortuneatly.. Please get back with more specifics: System specs Windows Version Anything that may be directly related to that drive as well. (a Model number for example and Firmware Version)

....well the 2nd computer can find it it comes up saying boot failure which means its trying to load up off that hard drive but in the bios it comes up as primary ide master and the other 2 hard drives i have third master and 3rd slave........how can i get this so the 3rd master is primary master and the 3rd slave primary slave and the new hard drive secondary slave?

probably either by move the cables around to match the connetors 1/2/3/4..
Or you can set it to boot from the HD that is correct... by going into the bios and setting the boot hardrive to the specific hardrive that has the information needed... And if being seen in the intel p4 system... i'm curious to know what your MSI one is.. You don't have the box? or the manual for it.. should say right on it somewhere.. even on the motherboard itself.

wot program do i use to format them to their full capacity? i used some seagate program to format it and it only did it at 127Gb not 250Gb.
then i used partition manager and i got it to format the whole drive to 250Gb then i when i restarted the computer it didnt come up again. |

strange...
you could try resetting the to defaults in the cmos.. perhaps you need a bios update for the board? here's the biostart product page.. http://www.biostar-usa.com/mbdetails.asp?model=p4m80-m7 might try sending biostar a email asking to see if there is a problem.. But frankly i can't see why the thing doesn't want to work... is there a SATA1 Capability mode on it?

I Dunno if you have a S-ata and a P-ata running on the same system.
On my system i have to pull out the P-ata drive connectors, to setup Windows on the S-ata drive , otherwise windows will install it self on the P-ata, and refuse to setup on The S-ata drive, even while the S-ata drivers are loaded from diskette.

i don't beleive you can backup the bios before defaulting it...
best way to do it would be to write down the settings you've got..

is this an F-6 thing where you have to load the SATA drivers during the XP install?

you 'might' need to force the new Seagate 250 GB ST3250824AS drives to 1.5Gb/s mode.
so, in the mean time i like you to check with Seagate tech supports, either email them at DiscSupport@seagate.com (or fill in the form at http://www.seagate.com/support), or call them on the phone. ask them where you can get the jumper for your ST3250824AS drives, since the jumper is not come with the drives, and give them reason that you want to force the ST3250824AS drives to 1.5Gb/s mode. your new ST3250824AS drives have NCQ and Hot Plug features, but i don't think the SATA controller on your motherboards can handle these features. i have not yet checked your motherborad's... i'll get back to you again when i have already checked your motherboards's BIOS and specs, and give you all the info in one step. |

Computer 1 -- MSI 865PE Neo2.
User manual - http://66.96.84.4/support/mnu_exe/mbd_mnu/E6728v1.1.exe MSI 865PE Neo2 has at lease 3 versions • 865PE Neo2-S [Standard Version, SATA(SB)] • 865PE Neo2-LS [10/100 LAN, SATA(SB)] • 865PE Neo2-FIS2R [Gb LAN, IEEE1394, SATA(SB), Ultra/SATA RAID(Promise)] I'll not talk about the Promise controllers unless your MSI 865PE Neo2 has them and you want to use the Promise SATA connectors. will talk about the connectors that are powered by the southbridge chips. the "Native Mode" which i think it is equivalent to "Enhanced Mode" in newer or some of the Intel chipsets motherboard's BIOS, when Enhanced Mode is set under the On-Chip SATA function, this usually means 6 hard drives at most will be supported (under Windows 2000/XP only), with it set to "SATA Only" only S-ATA hard drives can be used.
some of the newer Intel chipsets motherboards that also supports RAID have included 3 SATA Modes in the BIOS setup, IDE, RAID and AHCI. some of these newer motherboards's BIOS also include an option under the SATA Mode called something like "SATA transfer speed" (Disable, Force SATA's Generation 1 or 2). both of your motherboards don't have AHCI mode, the SATA controller can only be either RAID or IDE mode. it's only RAID (and/or AHCI mode) has been configured then the required driver needs to be installed (not sure about the Via chipset). the problem here is that after the On-Chip SATA has been Enabled in the BIOS your computer do not automatically detect the new SATA drive. so you are now 100% okay with the 'Computer 1', no more problem with the BIOS detecting the drive, correct?
about the pic of your 'Computer 2' motherboard's layout, i got that pic from the motherboard manual, so it must be it. anyway, you'll want to set the SATA Mode option to IDE, not RAID. then in Windows goto Device Manager and see if you can see any sign of any device that needs a driver? |

go to http://imageshack.us/
then browse to the image file on your drive and upload it... you'll want to use .jpg,.jpeg or.png files, not .bmp file. will answer the other Qs later, let finish the problem that you're now having on your comp 2 first. |
