fdisk alternative?

I hate how long I have to wait for M$'s fdisk to 'verify' the whole harddrive everytime I want to fdisk it. I'm trying to install WinXP again on my laptop (it has a 40gig hd), and I want to partition the drive. PartitionMagic 8.0's rescue disks don't seem to be able to work (It'll boot but the program on the second disk suffers a fatal error after it starts ) Are there any other (faster maybe?) utilities out there?

Er, you might be able to use the linux install disk to do formatting for FAT32, then cancel the installation once the format is done... or if you can find a copy somewhere, try and use the WindowsPE (Preinstallation Environment) program (which I don't believe you can get outside of MSDN, though that might have changed since release...)

This is strange..... I put the winXP cd back in to set up windows and then partition it with PM and I was able to define my partitions. Oh well, I'd still like to know about any partitioning programs, I won't always be installing XP since it only gave me NTFS as the format.

Thanks.

What make of Hard drive do you have ?
Most popular brands like IBM, Seagate, Maxtor ect. have there own installation programs which you can download from their websites.
They're great and will let you set up your hard drive in fraction of the time fdsik will. Especially good for large drives !!

use pqmagic(DOS) off the 2 diskettes..
sometime it'll gives error, if NTFS is the 1st primary partition on 1st HDD.
heres how to..
1) boot with win98 boot disk, when you see "CD Drive" or "No CD Drive" press Shift+F5(no drivers), use FDISK to delete all partitions, off from fdisk.. put in pqmagic rescue disk "2", at A:\> type PQMAGIC and it'll load.
2) or, use PQBOOT(DOS) to mark "active" to XP partition again. now you can use the 2 pqmagic rescue disks.

norton ghost

norton does a good job in rewriting the partition tables; that is if you have a prior image. When you "un" ghost the image it gives you an option to resize all the partitions.
