EEK! EEEP! Windows98se problems! EEEP!

Ok, I actually feel embarressed asking for help on this but I need some help.

I'm not sure quite how, but I hosed-up me 98se install on Bubbles. Everytime I try and boot into her 98 partition it'll go thru the boot-up all the way thru the windows drivers loading, then she'll re-boot and do it again forever until I shut her down or boot into XP.

On the brightside, I'm getting me XP partition back in shape...but I'd really like to fix me 98se partition. I've tried a LOT of sh!t, I can boot into 98se in safemode and I tried disabling most of the loading stuff, looking for any bad run commands, etc...but no avail.

Anyone have any advice on how to proceed with this one? I REALLY don't want to re-install 98se on her right now as I'd lose me XP partition too and I just ain't got the time to play with it right now...but I sort of count on 98se on her so I NEED it.

Hmm wow ok . . . I was really thinking it would be something there
Can you boot in logged mode, and maybe check that out?
I dunno . . .

EDIT: Ahh, or add Logo=0 to msdos.sys, and boot up and see what's the last thing on the screen before it reboots?
. . . or try step-by-step confirmation mode . . .

I tried that. It loads up the windows drivers thru msmouse.vxd (or whatever) then goes into it's re-boot. Nothing in any start-up files or locations like that either in the registry.

nieves is on a distinguished road

You don't *have* to lose your XP partition if you reinstall '98SE. As long as you don't format it You can safely format the '98SE partition and then boot from the XP install CD. It will detect your XP partition and offer to repair it, that means writing in boot.ini the required line to set up the XP partition and the ntldr file which loads the nt type partition at boot. It's a safe procedure, I've done it several times. Win2K (and XP, for that matter) have good recovery procedures as long as you have the boot cd and (sometimes, required for other stuff) knowledge of recovery options provided by the magical F8 key

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Nieves

Nope, I haven't done that...but I'm writing this from her XP partition which has been behaving just spiffy since her 98se side took a dump. (I haven't booted into it since changing the viddy cards around, it took a few minutes to get me drivers straight. Points to XP, it cleaned up nice. )

THANK YOU!!! I knew there was a way to do that, I just couldn't remember how. (I think I did that once... ) I'll give it a shot this afternoon.

Trik is on a distinguished road

What is ";FORMAT" doing in the MSDOS.SYS file?

Try removing that line and saving the file.
Then try to boot into 98se.

Good Luck
Trik

PS: Keep us posted.

Your going to be installing windows 98 alot on that system. 512mb ram is very bad for the windows 9x/Me line of OS's. There is some memory leak never fixed in windows dealing with having more than 384mb of ram or maybe 256mb, but 98 seems to run best with 256mb of ram.

And three months later...

Oh yeah, I got it fixed. Thank you all. Then I added another drive and re-installed everything anyways.
