IDE controlled harddrive question
I'm trying to install a new harddrive. i have 2 SATA Hardrives already working. I found a two older 80 gig WD barracudas lying around and decided to put one in my PC. only my pc is not detecting any new hardward i have my dvdrom drive attached as the first device which works and the barracuda attached as the second on the IDE cable im pretty sure these drives havent been used so can i get this ultra ATA drive working with SATA drives already in the machine?

yes, they can work together in the same machine. have you looked at the jumper settings of the ATA HDD? because you have the optical drive as the first device in the chain, i'm assuming that it is set as "master". if so, make sure that the HDD is set to slave. then it should work no problem.
also, you might need to format the drie if it hasn't already been done so (which might be another reason why windows isn't picking up the drive). to do that, you need to go like this: right click my computer > click manage > click "disk management " on left side > when the right side displays all the drives click on the ATA drive and click "format". afterwards, the drive should be picked up b windows. .you might want to check your system's BIOS first just to make sure it picks it up. if it doesn't check the jumper like i said first, set it to the proper location, then check your BIOS again. Once it gets picked up by the BIOS, go into windows and do that disk management thing i said. |

i was afraid to use the seagate disk utility hard drive installer but went ahead and did anyway after that my barracuda shows up in the bios as well as device manager but not disk management I set the jumpers for the hard drive as master and the optical as slave, because i positioned the HD as first in the in the chain after reading that my original set up can cuase poor HD speeds in some cases only being able to read and write as fast as the optical.
Now i need to figure out a way to actually get the HD working as it shows in bios/device manger but no where else maybe i'll try a uninstall then use the device manager to re-install ihope that works. While we are on the subject are there any good ways to optimize my HD's speed? I've made the neccessary adjustments to the bios but a little tweaking goes along way |

so basically what you're saying is that the drive shows up in your BIOS, but not in windows right? if that's the case, you just need to go to disk management and format the drive through there.
as for tweaking the drive, you have already done it by setting the drive to master .when i get home (in about 30min.) i'll post some screenies of what my disk managment window looks like so you can compare mine to yours. |

However, I'm not using a RAID array of any kind. Rather, I have my BIOS set to Enhanced IDE. One of the SATA drives is my system drive and both SATA drives are 160 GB drives. The other two are both 80 GB drives. If you only have the 2 SATA drives, one CD/DVD drive, and are adding that 80 GB IDE drive, you should be able to connect it on its own ribbon using the proper ribbon cable for it and set it to either Cable Select or Master w/out Slave. But, yes, it will need to be formatted in order to actually show up in Windows as a storage device. |

HA GIGGITY GIGGITY GIGGITY ............. i fixed and now have 74.58 gigs of extra space you want to know what it was a bad disk i used the other 80 gig barracuda i had laying around and it worked first time disk manager is formatting it as I speak. i couldnt be happier. oh and the dell service tech almost formatted my drive remotely its labeled DRV4_VOL1 (H): NTFS ACTIVE HEALTHY i put a stop to that quicker than you can say lickety split why oh why would my dell service buddy do that. thanks for you's guy's time.
