DOS freezes ?

I was trying to run the KX soundcard drivers and needed to make an adjustment with the soundcards setting through DOS as it turns out i see that any command freezes up this DOS promt giving the typicial error message END PROGRAM .

i did a DIR on it and tried to close it and got the same message

specs. 3000+ amd K8vga-m
512 mb ram
nvidia 256
120gig HDD
win-xp sp2

if the DOS programs tried to handle the hardware direct, then it is true in many cases if this is Windows XP...
