Windows Xp hangs need help

Hi i recently replaced my dying celeron with a p4 2.4 i installed it into my ga-8smil motherboard it booted fine etc i reinstalled windows etc. But since ive updated windows it seems when i get into windows its self every so often the computer stops responding i.e. i cant get taskmanager up yet I can click icons on desktop then after about 2 minutes the things i clicked finally load up then it goes smooth for a while and the same thing happens. I noticed when I closed wauclt down in the process manager it seemed to help.

Oh and another problem lol I also purchased a motherboard to go with my new cpu the board is an intel but i dont know the name it has "derg2" in the name tho if that helps lol sorry, well yes that motherboard wouldnt detect my ram for some reason so I had to resort to my old board.

and it seems now that everytime i try to run windows update the computer hangs for a long long time.

my cpu tempreture is 65 at idle is that right?

Oh yes my specs

x800xl aiw agp 256mb( 6.8 drivers)
audigy 2zs (latest drivers)
ga-8siml motherboard
600watt psu
2 gig pc2700 ram
2x80 gig hardrives
4 meg connection
17inch lcd
dvd rom drive

Ok I noticed this problem only occurs when I connect to the internet and I also noted svchost.exe was using 100% and that windows update would start right after it I then closed this down and its fine now but my menu bar has gone grey I think I should just turn windows update off
