Greetings and welcome to DriverHeaven!

First off, this post will likely get moved. It's in the wrong thread. This thread is here to discuss retailer experiences...not computer problems. So, be aware that a moderator will likely move it soon.

Now, to your problem. It may actually not be a problem at all.

You say that the computer shuts down when doing tasks that take long periods of time. This sounds more like a Power Setting that needs to be looked at.

Does the computer come back "on" when you click the mouse or a key on the keyboard? If so, this is a normal function of Windows in its default configuration. The power settings are designed to put the computer to "sleep", shutdown the HDs when they're not in use for extended periods of time, and, even turn off the Monitor to save power.

To see if the settings are what's causing this simply follow these steps:

1. Right click on a blank space on the Desktop. You'll see a pop up menu.

2. Select Properties at the bottom of the options.

3. In the next screen you'll see "Display Properties" with some tabs. Select the Screensaver tab.

4. Near the bottom right corner is a POWER button. Click that.

5. Check all the settings listed here to determine if things are getting turned off at certain intervals of time. If you don't want anything to turn off, select Always On in the top one, and NEVER in all the others.

Good luck!

PS If this isn't the source of the trouble, please post back with more details.

have you tried doing any boot-time hardware diagnostics? Get a copy of SeaTools off of seagate's website, and burn it to a CD [it can be found in ISO format and is very small...like, a few megabytes] and boot from it and it will check your partitions and disks and controllers for you

There are 4 things that I can think of: bad hard drive, bad network card, bad power supply, or heat issues.

- As you are downloading Windows is saving data to the drive. If the hard drive has bad sectors this could cause the system to crash. However, this doesn't seem all that likely as you say your system is shutting down, not crashing. Mind you, it may be worth scanning your hard drive for errors anyways just incase (to do so, right click the hard drive in My Computer, choose Properties, Tools tab, and hit the button under the Error-checking section).

- Is the network card built onto your motherboard, or is it a seperate card? You may consider trying another network card temporarily to see if it's bad. Also, did Windows install the drivers for you automatically? If so, you may want to try changing your network card drivers with official ones from the manufacturers site. If you are unsure where to get them just post the type of network card listed in Device Manager under the network section, and we can point you in the right direction.

On a side note, you may also want to try changing one setting. By default Windows turns of some devices in order to save battery life of laptops. Problem is, it can do this with some desktop cards too, and depending on the network card, it may do it to them too. It all depends on how they are designed, both hardware and driver wise (I've seen some wireless network cards have this support). If your card supports this, you may want to turn it off. To do so, go into Device Manager, expand the network card listing, and check the properties of your network card. If you see a tab called "Power Management" be sure to uncheck the setting there (which should be something like "Allow Windows to shut this device off to save power".. or some such listing.

- Bad PSU. This would be my first choice as the culprit. Depending on what you do with the system you can draw more power than normal. There are 2 ways to test this... sort of. First, shut your machine down, disconnect all un-needed USB devices ('cept your mouse and keyboard if they are USB), and unhook all un-needed optical drives. This will reduce the amount of power being drawn from your PSU. Then, bootup the machine, and start downloading something big. If it doesn't shutdown this time it could be that your PSU is bad. Also, if you have access to another power supply, try using it.

- Lastly, depending on the way the bios is setup, and whether or not it supports the function, the system may shut your machine down if the heat reaches a certain point (on a related note, if the PSU is overheating it can cause your system to shutdown as well.. just another reason to try a different one). Right after your machine shuts down go into the bios, and check the tempretures listed in there, and post them up here if you are not sure what to make of them.

OK...we need to get down and dirty here.

Give me some more details as to EXACTLY what is happening and under EXACTLY what kind of circumstances. Does the computer shutdown if it's simply sitting idle? Or what activities seem to cause it?

Do you hear any unusual sounds just prior to the computer turning off? Any beeps? Any metal scraping?

Do you smell anything that smells like it's getting hot? Take the side cover off and place your hand near.....but not on....the areas of the video card, CPU, PSU, Hard Drive/s and RAM memory.

Is anything in your system Overclocked or Mis-clocked? RAM memory and CPUs can sometimes be Auto Detected wrong! I know my own RAM was and I had to manually correct it. Check your manual and any specifications for the components in your system and make sure things are set up properly. However, in most cases you should get some kind of warning beeps from the system if something is wrong. These settings have to be checked and made in the BIOS Setup.

How are you connected to the Internet? Dial-up? DSL? Cable modem? Be specific including any Network Cards installed and in use.

How old is the computer? Is it custom made or off the shelf?

We'll keep trying until we find the culprit.

Let's concentrate on keeping the computer on for now.

Since it's a laptop, you should invest a very small sum of money in what's called a 'cooling rack' for baking. It's a wire frame rack that sits up off the counter/desk and allows for airflow beneath a baking sheet for cookies and other baked items.

What you do with this is put in on the surface and place the laptop on it. This then allows airflow beneath the laptop and will help with cooling a LOT. Try that and see if your laptop stays on.

Good luck!

Click Start, then User Control Panel, then Administrative Tools, then Event Viewer. Look for errors in the Application and System categories.

Device Manager is accessed from within Control Panel, click on System click the Hardware tab and then Device Manager. Look for yellow symbols that indicate hardware driver problems etc.

Also make sure to do a full updated virus scan.

I have an Aspire 3003. Try removing the battery, and see if it still shuts down. It could be a bad drive motor drawing too much current.

To get in to Device Manager right click "My Computer" then to go "Properties" Next click on the "Hardware" tab then click on "Device Manager".

If the computer will stay on long enough, go click on Start, Settings, Control Panel.

Once there, double click on System.

Once that opens up, click on the Hardware tab.

Then click on the Device Manager button. You are now in Device Manager.

To get to the Event Viewer, from the Control Panel page, double click on Administrative Tools. Then double click on Event Viewer. Click on the options on this screen one at a time to see the log headings. Scroll down the list to view any Warnings or Errors.

Check for Errors and/or Warnings that happened at the time the computer shutdown.

If it shuts down while you're doing any of this, reboot and go immediately to the Event Viewer and check it out.

EDIT: Oops....didn't notice there was a page 2 here already. LOL

more detail a little further on the error/warning... Event ID, Source, and the Description?

however, if i understand correctly you mentioned you also found that the Windows device manager displays some red and yellow symbols in fornt of some devices?
if so, i'll then presume that you need to fix the device conflicts problem in the Windows software system by either update drivers for the problem devices and/or install drivers for them in the case that they needed one. or otherwise just disabled the problem devices in BIOS if you don't use them.
try checking this first.

While viewing the error report, take a screenshot (printscreen button), paste it into paint (programs -> accessories -> paint). save that as a jpg file. Go to http://www.imageshack.us/ and post the picture. Paste the link they give you in these forums so we can get an exact picture of the errors you are getting.

You can also save the log as a txt file and copy and paste a portion of it showing your errors.

Is your AntiVirus up to date? Is it possible that this problem is due to a virus?

The Print Screen button is position at the end of the Functions keys. It's usually marked, Prt Sc or some other abbreviation on newer keyboards.

If you don't have any AntiVirus program installed, that elevates the suspicion that the problem is due to a virus.

We are referring to your keyboard...not the image you see on the screen.

What type of keyboard do you use to type your messages here on DH? Look on the keyboard above Insert, Home, Page Up....etc. At the end of the Function keys should be a PRT SCN key. Press that to capture whatever is on the monitor. Open your image editor and then Paste (CTRL-V) that image into the editor.

OK...we got the PRT SCN situation taken care of and how to post the images here.

Now, you need to double click on those lines with the Red X where it says Error. Select a couple of the most recent ones. A new screen will come up with some text in it. With that on the screen, press the PRT SCN key again and paste this image into your graphics program. Be sure to get at least a couple of the one where Service Control Manager is in the line and where Applciation Hang is in the line.

We await your reply.
