Outlook Express & Email

my wife is experience(just recently) very slow response while typing emails ...the letters slowly appear in the email itself.

We have used system restore to a point several weeks ago and that did not help.

When using Word or Excell no lagging occurs. She has 1Gb of ram.

Have used Spybot S&D,Adaware etc to ensure no virus or worms etc. Windows is up to date

Web surfing is just a quick as ever

Any ideas on how to solve??????

thanks in advance

How much mail do you have saved within the client itself?
How long has it been since you cleaned up all temp folders and files and defragmented your HDD?
Have you tried just uninstalling and reinstalling the email client?
System restore is for a last resort. Restoring your OS with system restore hardly ever fixes a troubled application.
Can you take a screenshot of your running system processes and post it here?
What is your CPU utilization when she is creating email?
How much ram does your current system configuration consume?

The amount of stored messages in OE doesn't have anything to do with HDD space. I have heard in the past that storing a large amount of saved, sent, and created drafts within the client itself can really slow down the functionality of OE.
Per second post:
What about your running processes? Screenshot?
CPU utilization during idle state and during OE use?
RAM utilization during idle state and OE use.

Have there been any hardware or software changes recently?
Is your system clean of all temp files?

Absolutely. Just like with Outlook, OE has a size limit. In this case, 2GB. The closer OE get's to that limit the slower it gets.

Something to consider is that Outlook Express, by default, has automatic compression of emails always on. The closer the total amount of saved email gets to 2GB the more often OE will run the compression aspect of itself to the point where it will slow down the system every time you run it, cuz it will be compressing emails in the background every single time. This is where Pangings idea comes in. With OE each idendity is seperate from the other. Literally, OE creates seperate folders for each idendity. If it runs fine in a new identity then it's safe to say that it might be time to do some house cleaning of the other identity.

However, here's something else to try. Run OE from Safe Mode. If it works there just fine then your problem could be due to other issues, such as a virus, or that something is interefering with OE. One culprit would be an anti-virus software. The more restrictions put onto email scanning by an antivirus software the slower OE gets. Infact, I've found that the longer McAfee handles email scanning, the worse things get overall (OE crashes, or not opening), and everything can go to hell in a hand basket if you decide to uninstall it without first disabling the email protection.

thanks all for the help.

It was not memory usage issue, had problems even with usage below 10%. Used Spybot,Adware, Spysweeper .............

HD was 93% free and recently defrag, chkdsk was ok. Tried a different idenity in Outlook express same problem. Used CCleaner which cleaned alot Crap but didnot help..updated HP printer drivers

Bottom line it turned out batteries in the keyboard were low so I replaced them and pesto chango no issue.........still do not know why there was no problem in Word

thanks again

I actually just dealt with this about a week or so ago but still wouldn't have thought about it. We need to put this one into a good place for future reference.
